petrol engine stalling... why? (ford fairmont)

Post by udm »

Its not a 4by engine but someone might be able to help...

As the 1996 fairmont is a city driven car, it bumps into a lot of traffic lights, and if the red lights go for too long, the engine will just shut down, and it is hard to get it started again.

The exact symptoms are after idleing for about 5min at 600rpm the engine suddenly reves up to 1500rpm by itself and shuts down, about 3sec in the whole process.

Anybody know what is causing this? Some sensor perhaps...

There are no heat problems, its a 6cyl. auto and has 170.000kms on it.

Hmmm... funny one. Maybe try cleaning the throttle body with some carby cleaner and a rag. If that doesn't fix it, it may have a crook idle control motor!
The EF/EL's can have problems with the earth wire going from the battery to the block (near the LH engine mount). Maybe check the connection on the block!

unplug the map sensor they do funny tyhings sometimes. its on the firewall or under the inlet (map / temp on mewer models). you can drive without the map but it will hesitat under hardish acceleration but i will run fine at idle (factory settings). other then that i had the fuel pressure reg die on the au and it did a similar thing

It took me years to get my old EF idling correctly

Try the procedure for cleaning the idle speed controller in this link
