Leaking Diesel cap

Post by of4x4 »

After a great weekend in the Vic High Country, I've discovered that my diesel filler cap is leaking. Anytime the tank's over 3/4 full and it lurches around the fuel slops out the side.

Not sure if I lost mls or litres, but at 149.9 cpl (Dargo) I can't afford to just throw it on the ground.

Do I need a new cap, or can the rubber seal be replaced? It feels like it tightens up properly when inserted and clicks on the ratchet thingy.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Question for u - when you look down the filler neck, is there a flap in there like you see in Unleaded cars? Mine doesnt have one in there.

I'd try a new cap first off - if thats where it IS leaking from.

Nup. Nothin' there. It's an 89 GQ (Forgot to put that in original post   ).

It's either leaking from the rubber seal around the cap, or via the air bleed in the cap. All I know is I have a huge mark where the dust / dirt / mud has stuck to the fuel gushing from the bottom of the fuel door.

Come to think of it, when I filled it at Mansfield, the cap was dripping fuel (suggesting that it was full of diesel) Maybe an internal seal / valve if it contains such a thing.... :?:

Agreed - first point of elimination. Is there anything specific about the cap on a diesel - i.e. can I get one from Repco / bursons / etc or is it a Nissan $$$ job?

they are the same, the cheapest way is to borrow someone elses cap first to see if it is the problem.

whilst on the subject, in the right rear wheelwell there is what i believe to be a breather for the diesel tank, it has a white plastic shroud over it i guess to prevent dirt/water splashing in. is this the fuel breather? because if i do my fuel cap up one click the next time i open it, even after running the engine for only 30min or so it sucks in air really bad.
it is possible that the breather is blocked as the shroud was covered with mud and i picked it all out with a screwdriver.
