Hey peoples
Want to get the opinion on this, but take all into consideration.
Really old crappa of a SWB MQ Patrol, therefore not really worth spending money on Lockas would be more than half the money I paid for it. Laughing
My little Brother is head diesel Mech for a truck workshop and therefore has access to high amps welder, therefore really good job will be done.
It has manual lock in, free wheeling hubs, therefore no issue whatsoever of affecting on-road driving.
We are talking a 1981 model so no power steering making it a prick to steer now.
My question is simple, Should I weld the front diff or will it make it really hard to drive off road ?? Has anyone done this ? Or would I be better off doing it to the rear?
Similar Questions elshwere has suggested swapping front to rear as apparently the Patrols have decent LSD in the rear. Is this true of one so old? Then weld the front one and put it in the rear. Are the two diffs interchangable??
Any suggestions??

ok, from what i read your talkin an MQ here, their diffs are differnet front and rear, they run aC200 front diff and an h233 in the rear, there fore you cant not just chuck a LSD up front,
but, on the other hand, i believe some nissan performance car range comes out with a R200 rear diff, if you do your reasearch right, you may find the centre interchangeable, BUT i am not completly sure on this,
you can weld your front diff no dramas, steering will be heavy, but im sure youll manage, if not, keep your eyes peeled for a factory power steer set up and chuck it on, you will love it on road and off road,

There is a C200 rear diff. I have one in my 83 MQ and it is an LSD. But I don't think you got many light duty rear diffs in OZ. love to hear this kinda thing.how do u rate the cig weld for the in between tracks and rocky stuff..........ive thought about it for a while but i think id get a second one weld it and give it ago. if its a budget truck weld it and it would be unstoppable.............stool wrote:Just weld it the steering is fine

Interesting to hear the responses .. we did this years ago to a G60 and with no power steering was almost impossible to turn when fourbying .... it was a 350 hooked to the 3 speed manual ..... with the hubs in and in 4wd just couldn't turn it.MyGQ wrote:just wanted to know

Still it had heaps of traction and was the right price conversion for the age/value of the vehicle

Steering is fine when you are up and running` well if you let go of the steering wheel it will return back to centre but thats no problems.
The only time it gets tight or heavy is when you are stopped on hard rock and need to do a 3 point turn.
Which is over come by rolling back and forward to let the tyres slip while turning the steering wheel.And its mostly the rear tyres doing the sliping
as I have LSD rear
Or if you are in a B"tch of a spot and cannot go back and forward
just get your navi to unlock the hubs so you can turn the wheels Than lock the hubs back in after the turn {Only happend once to me yet }
Over all Im happy with the welded front diff untill I win Loto` And ive been told that the ARB locker replaces the diff centre awyway and you swap your ring and pinon over to the arb centre.

GQ with big nuts
with front air locker engaged i know my Patrol is sometimes almost impossible to steer, so i'm a little unsure about the hole welding the front thing, deffinetely weld the rear, all you gotta worrry about their is a few bucks for new tyres and a little cherp every now and then.
