Anyone got a thermo fan on a 3L motor???

Looking at removing the normal fan and replacing it with a big thermo. Anyone done this and know what size, brand is good?
And where a good price is?

And yes i know there is a post discussing this in general but i want answers specifically for a 3L :D

why do you wish for na thermo fan ? as a original belt driven style is far better

as plowy said, the toyota engine driven fan is pretty good and its unlikely a thermo will do a better job.

You probably would not lose/gain any power advantages due to the extra load placed on your alternator to power the fan. If you are asking the question because your original fan hub has died.. you can rebuild them for about $15 worth of silicon oil from toyota... there is instructions posted here somewhere, or else i can find them on the toyotasurf website if you ask nicely :D

I was looking at this for the following reasons:

Turn off during water crossings
Better fuel economy - maybe some more power
Everyone recommends this rather than a electric water pump change to get better fuel/power around 15% i have been told.

I was also going to rebuild the alternator to make it more powerful or put a bigger one in.

Thermo/elec Fan is more likely to fail due to dirt/dust/corrosion
Dont think ya gonna get 15% more power cant see that

Id stick to the engine driven fan,
In General 3l Motor Blows Chunks in Power Wise :armsup:

I would stay with the clutch fan, more reliable and usually better cooling also.

15% no chance not in a 4by anyways, water crossings- it might not turn back on after the crossing due to getting wet, and also the dust in the plugs.

guy on overlander ran the biggest davies craig thermo he could get on the front of his 3L turbo.... couldnt hold a match to the belt driven one.


and as for being able to fix a thermo coupling with 2 tubes of oil (now around $22 for 2) it doesnt always work, ive put around 4 into mine over the last 2 years, and it still doesnt work properly :cry:

im either going to need a $200 repco jobbie, a $500 toyota genuine jobbie, or a rebuilt one from somewhere! :cry:

Powermax make fan clutches for virtually every 4x4 model.
Available at any Autobahn for around $130.
I've had one on the Jabber for 18 months now - no drama's.
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
