Detroit Problems
Ok i brought some second hand hilux diffs of a member here a while ago and the rear is ment to have a detroit in it, i dont know for sure, its just what i was told.
Any way i have just got the zuggy going and the rear locker is not working. when trying to drive up something it just bangs in and out. I put it into 2wd and tried to drive up a dirt hill and it didnt move, just kept banging with only 1 wheel spining, I can ride the clutch and only give it a little throttel and it will slowly take off but still bangs. The whole zuk jumps when it bangs
I have just changed the oil using standard diff oil, i dont know if it was working befor the oil change as i only got it going today. There was no metal in the oil but the oil was dirty.
HELP Whats going on??

I do hate shite like this, while going for a spin i also found out that the rubber on the back of the tank that i thought was there to proctect it, is actuall glued on there to cover a hole
and now it is leaking
not sure which locker, was told the good one,
When i spin the right tyre by hand either way it spins the drive shaft, when i spin the left tyre forward the drive shaft spins but when i spin it backwards it just cluncks.

Alright this is the type of locker and the piece of metal i found in the bottom of the diff, its 17mm long.
Can any one help me?
Unless it is something very simple i will be asking for my money back, he would of known about this befor he sold it to me, if a little zuk can make it bang it would of been really really bad in his lux.

Deffinatley just the ez-locker sorry Shane. No-where as strong as a full detroit. You could pull the centre apart and check the springs and dowels inside the locker, but if you were told it was a full detroit, then you been sold false goods. Souns like it might be a spring or pin, but bits of metal floating round a diff centre is never a good sign.

Well the EziLocker was sold under the Detriot Locker name, so it would be easy to get confused.
I do agree though, they are not as tuff as a full on Detriot Locker, and chances are it may well be stuffed. Can these things be serviced? What about parts for them?
I just hope to hell I have no probs with either of my Detriots, as TracTech dont make my model anymore.

I run a ez-locker in my zook rear. It is possible to get a service kit with new springs/pins. But if bits of metal are floating round, you got issues dude.

Brought them less than a year ago, have been sitting in the shed being rolled around under the zuk. Paid good $$ for them, when they got here the rear housing was cracked, no wheel nuts, front swivel hubs leaking very badly, steering arms were missing (he was selling high steer arms as well but i didnt put 2 and 2 together) had busted a swivel hub bearing removing the steering arms, 1 of the steering arm bolts were broken, 1 hub selector bolt was broken, and know this
I had driven the zuk about 500m before i relsed there was something wrong, It was banging a bit while driving down hill but i thought it was normal. The tyres still have there nipples on them.

Have you even spoken to the guy you bought these off?jeep97tj wrote:Brought them less than a year ago, have been sitting in the shed being rolled around under the zuk. Sounds to me like you bought second hand diffs out of a comp vehicle or similar and expected them to be in new condition.
The picture you posted could be one of 4 different brand lockers i can think of. There is the LOKKA http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/lokka.htm by 4wd systems, A Lockright http://www.powertrax.com/lockright.html by Richmond gears, An E-Z locker http://www.detroitlocker.com/DEZ.htm by Detroit or an Aussie Locker http://www.aussielocker.com/ by Torq Masters.
Spare parts are generaly available for all of these and are not very expensive. It is also easy to remove and inspect. Non of these are realy all that strong in design. Should be instructions at one of the links above on how to remove or install.
Id be pulling it apart and checking the pins and springs they are pretty common to go on the little auto lockers.
You can get new springs from 4wd syetems as Ruff said in adelaide i think they are for about $20bucks.
I have a set of pins spare for the mav just incase not sure if they are the same tho.
Would be better putting the little locker in the front and whack the other 1 in the rear.

Im sorry but you say your had the diffs sitting in your shed for a year, move on cop it on the chin as a lesson learnt,(expensive lesson).
honestly if you sold something to some one and after a year they contacted you asking for a refund (full or partial) would you give it to them. I know I sure as hell wouldnt, same as I wouldnt expect it.

2001 100 series stock as a rock
On the same token if the guy that sold him the diff was a mechanic then he should of took the diff cover off and tried it, especially if he asked top dollar for it.revin wrote:Im sorry but you say your had the diffs sitting in your shed for a year, move on cop it on the chin as a lesson learnt,(expensive lesson).

Shane I have a spare set of springs and pins at my place if you want them untill you can get another set sent from SA .Russ has them i believe but wants shit loads for them as Bevan rang him for some ended up getting them from 4x4 systems in South Aus.Its very easy to pull apart and change them there are 8 springs and 4 pins.Im running this locker in the front got mine second hand of this board and they were a bit chewed but still run fine.Only broke one set of pins in the front of the old GQ when i blew up a cv on Edwards road bouncing up out of the valley on the rocky right hand side was full noise with 38s at about 6 psi everybody gives these lockers a bad name but they perform very well .If your looking for it to be heaps stronger then get a full center detroit if you want to go this way give Dave a call as he gets them from the states at a real good price. If your going to get rid of it let me no as spares are good please ill by it if its not to much
Thanks people as for learning a lesson, I have brought a few things off this board from members and all have turned up in the same condition as i was told, except theses diffs.
Clearly the rear diff was not working when sold to me as sitting there for less than 12months would not of caused this, why would u sell something that is not working, cracked and leaking and tell them they are in good condition?
If i had a hilux i would of tested them when i brought them, but as i didnt...
It is a shame this has happened and when i have a closer look at it i will contact him.
But for now i have another center i am going to weld so i can get it going today

Since when does time wear out or break a locker??revin wrote:Im sorry but you say your had the diffs sitting in your shed for a year, move on cop it on the chin as a lesson learnt,(expensive lesson).

If u look in my build up thread u can see them sitting there they have never been used since i have had them.
If some one was in the same suitation am me and i had sold them the diffs of corse i would refund the money, I sold them something that was falty, the first time they used them they failed.
(note to self "never buy anything from revin")

OK i finally have net access again.
I sold the diffs to DeWsE or Shane over 14 months ago.
They came off a daily driven comp hilux.
There was nothing wrong with them the before or on the day i drove the hilux the 50km run to work along the highway and dirt roads to when i stripped the car.
I would have never had sold anything that was stuffed on here, because I know the consequences.
The locker you show in the picture looks like the lock rite (i thought that was in the front), It's not a Detroit. If it has broken the pins it should have just stayed locked all the time. My thoughts are it is still ok.
Bentzook, how can you possibly tell from that picture that it's broken?
Have you checked the backlash on the gears yet? If this is not spot on, which it probably isn't, this may cause the locker not to engage properly.
It was never an issue running 35 inch tyres but a set of big heavy 39 inch IROK's would make the problem worse.
As for all the other issues with the diffs, what you paid for was the Ratios, the brake upgrade, the treated CV's and the lockers in a package, the housings and hubs came with them. As for the cracked housing, it was probably where the A Arm bracket was, which i was told you guys would be cutting off and re doing anyway. As for the leaking seals, what can i say, you bought second hand hilux diffs.
Shane you should have rang me sometime after you got them, i could have worked something out when you bought all those rings off me at the end of last year.
Good luck with it dude, i hope it's just the backlash.

So the detroit is in the front??
So if broken pins cause it to lock up? what would cause it to slip?
The other probs didnt worrie me as they were just little things, like u said they were second hand, but I couldnt keep quite about the locker failing straight form the shed.
I didnt contact u or mention your name as i dont even know what was wrong with it (still dont) I thought i might have stuffed it by using normal diff oil.
I wouldnt think it would bang on the road as both wheel would have good traction.
There is very little back lash in the gears.
I would think a V6 hilux on 35s would put more pressure on the locker than a zuk on 39s??

that's cool man, they are noisy lockers anyway, but i'm no mechanic so when i fitted it, i didn't change the backlash in the diff at all i just installed the locker.jeep97tj wrote:So the detroit is in the front??

My guess is it's in the setting up of the gears, not the locker.
If it is the locker, you should just be able to replace the springs and pins, maybe the springs have gone all shitty from sitting around but this is unlikely.
