Tooheys wrote:Hi Ross,

Ive got a HJ47 Cruiser Ute, now im going to change the extractors over so i have the exhaust running outside the chassis rail on the passenger side and then run it into a stack on the back of the cab on the passenger side (all in 2.5in).

I have a mate with the same vehicle and he runs extractors into 2.5 inch for about 3 feet and then into 3 inch for about 4 or 5 feet exiting under the rear of the drivers door with no muffler. His exhaust is a bit too loud for me so i was considering running a resonator to quieten it a little or maybe a small straight through muffler.

I still want a good note just not the drone his has at high revs so which would you recommend or do you have another suggestion?

Cheers, Tooheys
if you dont want drone run 2.5" if you want a muffler option i build stacks with straight through mufflers built in to them these are good when your going straight up to your tray and there is no room for a muffler

Dr. Ex

Mate just wondering i have seen a few 4.2 turbo diesel landcruisers with 3" straight through exausts, no mufflers no nothing just a 3" pipe off the back of the turbo right through to the exhaust tip, im a bit confused with the whole back pressure thing on the exhaust valves, Im wanting to put a 3" system on my landcruiser and if there is no risk of damaging anything with the striaght through system ill go that way as i think they sound awsome, and they all seem to go really well.

Thanx in advance

Hi Doc Zaust :D

My Sierra runs a EFI 1.6L Vitara engine. Previously it had 4-2-1 extractors (not sure the manufacturer), this ran into a flex joint, onto 2" tube with mandrel bends. The muffler was right at the back under the tray, it is 2" straight through jobbie off a road bike (titanium too :D). Note that it had no cat converter.

I've since made some changes and it's going to be really hard to get the muffler under the tray, so I was thinking that i'd keep the extractors, get rid of the flex joint, go straight into a cat converter then into my muffler, then kick the tube up the back of the cab breifly before dumping in front of the passenger side rear tyre. I was going to keep it 2" tube and mandrel bends.

It had a nice note before, but if I redo things this way I was afraid it's going to be too loud. You thoughts?

Also...

1. What cat should I use?
2. Is 2" tube + mandrel bends OK for this size engine?

Cheers,

Damo.

yes they do work well just a little loud a some revs but if you dont mind a bit of noise then go for it
it wont hust as the most efficent turbo is one that has zero backpressure

this is the right pipe size for that engine
you only need to use a 2" ceramic uni cat for that dont pay any more than $150 for it
the noise wount be a lot louder as the cat takes out a fair bit of noise

l h side outlet before the wheel is not legal as that is the perdestrian side of the road you may have to put the pipe out the back ot rhside

if you cant get a cat at the right price ring me i orginize one for you

Gday Doc,

Great tech in this thread, I reckon everyone is grateful for the advice :D

Speaking of which ;)

I have a 93 Hilux LN 106 and I want to put extractors, a fairly straight through 2.5 inch system and a small muffler on it.

I need to run the exhaust down the outside of the left chassis rail and tuck it up around the inside the left rear wheel well cause I'm putting a second tank under it and need the space where the standard muffler usually sits.

I know its hard to quote without seeing it but I am a few hours away from Melbourne and have no good exhaust shops around. If need be I can take some pics of what I mean.

It would be great if you could suggest some options and prices as I need this done before I head to Perth in July.

Cheers

Brand of extractors and type? Size of system 2.5"? Not worried about abit of sound. Has a standard system at the moment. Your help is greatly appreciated.
every one quotes pace maker extractors for these but i have found on some occations they can be a little big for tb42,s
i prefer the cheeper brand of wildcat as they have a little more restriction and create better gas speed

if your not to worried about a bit of extra noise then sertainly go 2.5" with a large 11x5x18" strait through muffler in the front and a 5" round resenator in the rear
I'm in the same boat as Patrol Paul (and my names Paul...freaky huh!)
Anyways would 3" be better than 2.5" or is it just spank value? If theres gonna be noise I want a deep note.
hey mate was wondering if you could answer this about 2.5 and 3 inch as im in the same boat and want to do something sortly im not worried about note loud would be good though ;) and what type a $ would you expect to pay

thanks :D

Hey Doc,
I did read somewhere back in this thread (fantastic thread and resource by the way - thanks) that you are not really a fan of exhaust wrap.

Here is my quessie though - I have a landie defender (300tdi engine) and if you have ever been in one on a long haul in summer you know that there is a HEAP of heat coming in through the firewall and up from the transmisison tunnel and the floor panels.

I want to do whatever I can to reduce heat and noise in this vehicle. I already have some of the bituminous lined felt under the rubber mats.

What else can you recommend please? Are you sure that the various exhaust wraps and shielding wouldn't help me in this instance? I was thinking of some of these products:

I WOULD RUN A 2.5" SYSTEM ON THAT
you might get away with only one straight through muffler

dump pipe $220
system $300

acl make an aluminium heat proofing it comes in sheet form
it can be riverted to the under side of the floor pan and you will never have a heat problim again
it is good for 600 deg and can be easly shaped by hand
good luke with your problim

Hey Dr Ex!!

I know this has been asked a bit, in regards to the Cruisers...
...but I have a 78/79 Series Landcruiser RV, so has the 4.2TD.
I am looking at putting in either the Eng-Tek or Tun-It chip into it in near future and didnt know whether I should wait to put the exhaust in now, or wait and get it done all at once.
Is not running a muffler legal in QLD?? Should I use a muffler in since I am wanting to put a chip in it??
I was thinking just a sraight through 3" without a muffler, then if too noisy, I can put the muffler in at a later stage.
What do you think??

Damien

yes you can run a 3" system without a muffler the only legal point is the noise limit which must meet 96 dba at 3/4 of the max rev range
you may wish to put it on now as they are a very good improvement

hope this helps

Croosover pipe

Post by playdoh »

Have you seen any practical ways of moving the vulnerable crossover pipe on V6 Prado's, where they go under the gearbox behind the crossmember?
My old 4Runner had a pipe running down each side of the g'box and t'case crossing over the propshaft, but the prado has it's gear tucked up better, which doesn't leave room to do it that way.

Hey Doc,

Ive just bought a 97 2.2 petrol ford courier ute (for towing the zook). It currently has the factory exhaust.

Is there anything I can do to this system to make better use of the limited power and torque of this little engine. I will be fitting a more free flowing air filter as well but am unsure of the out side of the engine.

Cheers for any help.

hey, i haven't had a chance to run through this entire thread yet (will do later tonight) but had the following questions.

i have a 3.4l 3B diesel with extractors currently.. and a busted muffler just after the resonator...

i am planning on adding a turbo to it in the coming months (with a fairly conservative boost)..

therefore my questions are as follows..

- what is the best suited/sized exhuat setup for the turbo (not sure on turbo specs yet, its a denco kit though) - 2.25, 2.5 or 3"

- do you see any reason why this wouldn't work with the current n/a setup until the turbo is purchased and installed

- will a flex pipe help in the transfering from n/a to a turbo setup down the track, particularlly considering the change from extractors to manifold with the turbo install?

- will i get any benefit dumping the exhaust after the rear door, rather than going all the way to the rear performance wise (or is it just noisier?)..

- what would be a ball park figure for the setup you recommend?

Thanks for your advise and help.

UPDATE: just chatted to 1 exhaust place up here (aussie speed exhaust) and they quoted me approx $300 for the following, cut and weld a flange at the end of the extractors, bolt on a 2.5" size exhaust with a flex joint just after the flange.. to a resonator and then out the back... sounds ok to me.. therefore when the turbo is installed, theres is just a single bit of exhaust to connect up the system...

i've been offered a full exhaust system for GQ TD42 wagon. It was removed after the owner installed a turbo. 2 1/2" system, that has been cut to be removed. It's free to me, so is it worth getting it and have fitted? Mine is in terrible shape, and do need a new exhaust...

hi Ross, I removed those perforated cone shape s/s thingy's from the Y piece in my V6 Rodeo's exhaust that reduce the diameter to about 1" and I've noticed no difference in power like others have who did it, but one thing has changed: the Check Engine Light used to come on when I ran it on LPG and go off when I ran it on petrol, since I removed the "restrictors" it does'nt come on now when I run it on LPG.

Just wondering now if those "restrictor" thingy's had something to do with the O2 sensor working correctly. The restrictors were located before the O2 sensor.
Do you know anything about it?

i have a 3.4l 3B diesel with extractors currently.. and a busted muffler just after the resonator...

i am planning on adding a turbo to it in the coming months (with a fairly conservative boost)..

therefore my questions are as follows..

&300 sounds a fairly good price for that
if you are only going small boost 2.5" would be ample
you cant leagley go out the lhs of the car befor the wheel
awesome!! thanks for the feedback!! :)
thats ok
