Hey just wondering what is an ideal price for a defender ute?
I've noticed one in a yard for 15k with low k's, does this sound like an alright price or too cheap maybe something might be buggered in it?
I would greatly appreciate any knowledge on prices as would like to become a landy owner ASAP

there are td5 110 and 130 utes around, single double and extra cab bodies are available.
try places like triumph rover spares, andersons landrover spares, british 4x4(bayswater), 3wj?(new name)
ring WA and SA auction houses
they are out there
the guys at haultech paid about 6k for a going 200 tdi
i paid 10k for a 200tdi double locked.
trading post online in every state.
if you drop a finders fee into these guys laps they will do the legwork.

I would not buy from 3wj again.
3wj - sell rebirthed insurance writeoffs - I should know - they told me as have others in the industry.
I bought a 300tdi 130 ute from them and it caused no end of hassles for me for some time and they were really difficult to deal with. I wish that someone had warned me about them before I went out and looked in their yard.
Unfortunately I only started hearing other people's stories (friends with fourbies, people I met, mechanics, accessory salespeople...) AFTER it was too late. Mechanics would step back and look me up and down like I must be crazy and say "3wj - really? You know they sell insurance writeoffs don't you? How have you found them to deal with?"
One time an incorrectly fitted (by 3wj) accessory broke and even though it would have been covered by a warranty I just accepted that I was going to have to end up paying for it. When the name brand agent heard what had happened and who had fitted it he felt sorry for me and put it through as a warranty job to head office as if he himself had fitted it. He said that he felt sorry for me and knew only too well what it was like to deal with them. The rest of what he told me about them I won't put in writing here.
There had been nothing wrong with the part - it was how it was fitted that made it break. I would like to give these guys that helped me out a huge rap here but wouldn't want to risk getting them in trouble with head office!
The heavies in the 3wj yard seemed to get a kick out of being physically intimidating and aggressive to me and others I saw them dealing with in the yard. In the end their busines strategy worked and I gave up and took the vehicle to reputable landrover specialists and had to pay for stuff to get sorted out that the 3wj 'warranty' should have covered.
Did I say 'warranty'? Although promised as part of the deal it never came and you can only do the two hour round trip drive out there so many times to pick up promised paperwork before you realise that they lied and have every intention or running you back and forth until you eventually get the message and piss off.
I would ring to be told "yes my friend, it is all finished - ready to go, come and pick it up. So I would turn up to pick up the car having had to arrange lifts out there and back only to discover that not only was it not finished but it had not even been started. It didn't seem to matter that I would ring and say "Are you sure because last time ...." - these guys could not give a flying you know what.
"Service records - yes of course my friend - we have them here in the office and will give them up for you for the next time you come out". Eventually you realise that they lied and they simply aren't going to give you anything. If you have given a deposit on whatever condition it won't matter. No paperwork, no deposit back. "Are you calling me a liar mate!!!????" Things start getting heavy.
When I think of the term 'buyer beware' I think of 3wj. I think their new trading name is 4wd city. Now why would you need to move yards and change trading names? So called 'Biggest' does not mean best.
One time when I was out in their yard (trying to get a 'warranty repair' done they had a couple of cop cars parked there with a bunch of coppers in blue overalls and tactical footware crawling over cars with torches and sheets of paper they were checking stuff against. When I asked why the cops were there and if thought the cars were stolen I was told (by 3wj) "No they aren't stolen - we know exactly where they came from - they aren't going to find nothing - we get them from insurance companies and fix them up".
This is just the tip of the iceberg. The stories about a mates 80 series cruiser that must have had a swim at some stage is another absolute mind boggler. I am sure some people have had good dealings with them and been happy customers. For me it just was not like that. Getting my dream landie dual cab ute turned into something of a nightmare.
As far as your choice of vehicle goes - spot on. Just don't think about 3wj/4wd city. Go to people with a reputation worth protecting not worth hiding.
mods - ditch this posting if you have to but I felt I had to say something - I wish somone had warned me.
