Hey guys...

I had my vacuum switch in the transfer case replaced in Nov as 4wd wasn't being enaged properly... This cost me 1000 bucks to get done.

Today I had my checkup and they changed the oils for me.
When i picked it up they said the input shaft seal in leaking and will need replacing. This requires the gearbox to be taken out of the car. Also, the bearing inside needs replacing, thus it is a rebuild of the gearbox...

They quoted me $1520 to get it fixed... the clutch may also need renewing if the oil has contaminated it.. which will probably put it near 2g :cry:

Anyone had these issues before? I have an aftermarket warranty with my car which states that all internally lubricated components of the gearbox are covered by warranty. I beleive if the bearing inside is gone, this is the cause.. so it all should be covered... but its like getting blood out of a stone with all the warranty companies..

Note - there is nothing wrong with my gearbox besides the leak.. it drives perfect, never makes a noise, no crunches.. its perfect.. seems a bit much just for a leaky seal :?

hay mate do it your self and save $1500 . the seal will cost no more then $20 (about $10 off memory) and maybe days work at home or so worth a go :cool:

But they said the bearing also may be gone in the box... maybe i could do the seal and get away with leaving it... it isnt noisy or anything :?

If it's not noisy? then what's the mechanic talking about?? have you look under ur car and looked for oil leak?

Yeah, the leak is quite substantial at the join after the bellhousing.. This may mean the clutch is gonna get stuffed also :?

I had a lot of work done on my transfer case not long ago... wouldnt you think they would have just popped in a new seal while they had the boxes out if there was any sign of leakage.. Now it is dripping quite a bit.
My mate said they may have pinched the seal when they reinstalled the box last time... Coz to go from no leak to a fair bit has happened fairly quickly. :roll:

I'm going to get a 2nd opinion.. but I think i'll just do the input shaft seal.

From what I know it would be fairly hard (impossible even?) to damage the input shaft seal when refitting the box?

Ohh ok cheers Murcod.. my mate said it happened a few times at the place he used to work (The Transmission Factory).

Thanks Huggy, I'll ask him if any are needed... I mite see about getting ti done.. as the clutch may need doing also. There's no point taking it out and not replacing the clutch, and then it needs doing in a few months... may as well do it at the same time...

If your mate works at a transmission place then he should know! I guess if they tried forcing the gearbox back on something could be damaged? I was thinking the seal doesn't contact anything (apart from the input shaft) and should be out of the way when installing / removing a gearbox??

Sounds hella expensive, I had a bunch of bearings replaced in my Gbox and came out under 1grand :? , but my mechanic rawks :armsup:

Did your box pack it in? Or was it noisy? Mine seems fine still :?

My mechanic is a mate, but even without mates rates he's still cheaper than any other's i've been to. Might be worth a trip down to Sydney? I can dig up the old recipts if you like, and find out exactly what was done and for how much. Its been apart 3 times now, twice from water in there :roll: . Most recent was replacing on gear and some other lil bit, changed front uni, was about 600 IIRC
