home made shackles
i am making my own xtended shackles for my sierra and want to put in greasable pins where can i get them from other than the 4wd shops cos the local one wants to charge big dollars for them and there has to be another alternativedoes anyone sell them online any help would be greatly appreciated thanx
IMHO don't bother. for tthe work involved, there will be very little advantage if you use rubber or any of the new style urethane bushes. The old style very stiff urethane bushes needed grease, but it doesn;t seem to make very much difference now.
The bushes will be getting torn up by articulation well before they wear out through friction.

I made my own cost about $7 had new spring bushes in the springs but didn't put greasable pins in (I thought bad thing at the time) But the bushs have held up well and they don't make any noises at all. Works out way cheeper than buying them!
Built swb sierra, building a lwb sierra ute and have a dmax for family camping
in case anyone gets the wrong idea, I quite like extended shaackles so long as they are not over 2" over stock length and DONT have centre braces (the centre braces will murder articulation on a light car like a sierra)

I have had home made missing-link 2" longer than standard shackles for over a year, I was getting sick of the diff movement on road so I braced the centres. The on-road handling vastly improved and the flex has not changed in the slightest. I have pictures to support this.

I make extended shackles for sierras. They are laser cut, and have a centre brace. they are made from 10mm plate, and have all necessary bolts ( non- greasable) included. $100 plus postage ( bout $8-$15)
Not as cheap as home made ones, but these are a much better looking shackle than 2 bits of flat bar with holes in it.....
Have a think about it.

I agree the missing link shackles need bracing, but IMHO these suck anyway so it is a moot point.
If you use the right bolts and keep the length sensible, you don't need the bracing, but like most off road mods, the balance of off road ability and on raod behaviour depends a lot on what the owner wants to put up with

Gutless - Is that per pair or each or?
What do you think (apart from strength) would be the advantages of using say 10mm steel or 6mm steel?
The shackles you make are obviously suited to the orginal bolts etc?
Any particular reason you went for 10mm and used a brace?
what length are they? 2inch extended?

I was thinking of hiking the price up to $200 but then I remembered that we are all poor suzuki owners

If properly setup, they will allow more downtravel, due to the shackle being longer, but otherwise, they just give you a little more room in the gaurds for larger tyres.
