My 1992 Range Rover 300TDI , was losing power ... the more foot to the floor ....the less and less go and the motor had a shudder to it .
I pulled to the side of the road and notied that she just wanted to die , checked the air filter ...clean and dry [raining non stop] plenty of air getting thru ......check the fuel .....next to nothing
Before you ask .....she had a full tank mind you she has sat idle for near a week and a half due to PAS leaking ....
So i check the ACDELCO glass bowl filter .....bubbles lotsa bubbles blowing around in there so i grabbed a 10mm spanner and bled the filter next to the fire wall .....but still more and more air bubbles

I checked every hose that i could see and reach , all clamps tight , no apparant leaks So knowing that the pumpm is at the motor and it would be using vaccum i thought i would just open the fuel cap to see how that affected it The cap let go with a thump as the tank also sounded like it popped back into shape from vaccum
But leaving the cap off the bubbles stopped and the motor returned to full function and power put the cap back on and bubbles start back up and the tank starts to groan motor wants to stall take the cap off and what do you know the motor goes back to normal ........

So with this going on .....what tha hell would it be I can't drive around with no fuel cap on ...and it isn't solving the problem its just band aiding it

Can someone PLEASE PLEASE shed some light on this for me

Buy a new cap, they breathe through the cap.

I will try and source one tomorrow , also recommended to me tonight was a blocked breather pipe ?

If taking the cap off fixes the problem then it sounds like it is the cap that is blocked, not the breather pipe.

No it could still be the breather. As the filler neck then becomes the breather when the cap is removed.

Justin are you sure the fuel cap is vented on one of these? I cant see how it would pass emisions with a vented fuel cap. It should have a vent tube running right up to the front and into a canister in the engine bay.

Do the Disco TDIs have the same canister as the rangies - if they do should be a carbon canister in the engine bay with tubes going in and a vent tube runnind down under the car with a solinoid on it - check both ends of the vent tube and the input tube and make sure the solinoid opens when voltage is applied

Of course they mightn't have these

On my IIA and my 1987 (diesel) 110, the fuel cap has a vent hole in the centre (above the filler tube), and the breather tube comes off from the wall of the filler, about 0.5" below the cap. In this setup there is no way that a blocked breather tube can cause the problem mentioned, since the tank can breathe through the filler tube when the cap is fitted as well.

The later years are probably different to my 84. The breather from the filler goes into the bottom of the expansion tank (inside rh quarter panel). Then from top of expansion tank down and across rear of fuel tank then up into lh quarte panel (to prevent leaks on rollover). Then back down and across rear of fuel tank, before running forward to the carbon canister.

I have heard mention of rollover valves in later models, so they may not run the breather line like mine, but maybe the rollover valve can block.

The filler cap will not have a breather. Not allowed to vent fuel tank to atmosphere since well before 1992.

Ok ...started on her at 730am today 8O

Blew out ever fuel line front to back , breather hose , removed the AC DELCO glass bowl filter totally cleaned and brand new filter , dropped all the fuel from the tank and ran it thru a paper gauze filter ..amazed at the gunk in there 8O 8O
Bled the canister in the engine bay again .
Went to Britt Parts brought new fuel cap

it is 1236pm WA time ..........just sat down :roll:

verdict .......stopped doing it 8) 8) 8) 8)

but now noticed all the small fuel hoses between the injectors and split or leaking :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:

so i dont know which one of the above seems to have fixed it .....
Dave at Britt Parts seems to think it wouldn't be the fuel cap as they are ment to be a sealed unit ..but believes it may be the fuel lines ....he has it next week anyway to fix the ignition so will go all over it then

The fuel system on diesel models has a one way valve in the cap to allow for the loss of fuel during consumption. There is no canister on account of the fact that diesel fuel doesnt have the same rate of evaporation (volatility) as petrol, and therefore doesnt require evaporative emission control.
The breather in the filler neck is only to aid filling air circulation.
The Tdi Rangie and Disco1 doesn't actually have any other pipes to and from the tank other than the filler neck breather, the fuel return from the injector bleed off line from the injector pump return fitting, and the outlet to the lift pump. Early Discos and all pre Td5 Defenders with the metal tank actually have a blocked off fitting in the top RH of the tank, presumably for the fitment of a charcoal canister line for the petrol 4 cylinder engine or even carby V8 which they come out with in the motherland.
I would suggest a new cap would solve the problem.

Interesting Justin.

I wasn't aware that we got 300Tdi rangies in 92, so assumed the 300Tdi had been swapped in place of a v8.

Hi John,
There are a few Tdi rangies in oz as personal imports, one of my customers was looking at one on the central coast a while ago.

I did a Tdi conversion to a 1990 model a while back, and just left the canister line up in the engine compartment with a ryco Z14 attached as an extra fuel tank breather.
