is it normal to have backlash across a lsd diff ? That is from one wheel to the other, as iam currently having problems with the lsd on my GQ and would think this wouldn't be normal due to the clutch packs etc.

any thoughts

there is a small amount of backlash in the splines between the side gears and the axle shafts, and there is probably backlash between the side gears and the spider gears, but it is usually masked by the action of the clutch packs. how much backlash are you taking about? with one wheel on the ground, with the truck in gear, spin the wheel in the air by hand - does it turn 1/16 of a turn or less, or more?

That will also be the backlash from crown wheel and pinion also, and slop in unis and transfer and gearbox! Shaft mounted handbrake or rear brakes?? maybe not transfer and box if shaft mounted

its on a gq with a tranny brake. the unis are new. the backlash from wheel to wheel with one wheel on the ground is about 35mm measured at the outer circumferance of a 35 inch tyre. the center seems to rotate freely with no binding but grumbles under load. i hope to swap the center out friday night so i can have a good look at it

thanks Brad

We used to get grumbling in the lsd's of fronteras at work. To fix we drained diff oil and re-filled, adding a friction modifier.
