TB42 longevity
TB42 longevity
as a few of you know im searching for a GQ shorty, ive seen some that are getting up their interms of mileage, what kind of longevity am i looking at for the drivetrain before work should be carried out and the engine and what is the typical cost of a reco on the engine before anything goes bang, will this differ if the engine is running on LPG aswell
Re: TB42 longevity
How long it will last depends on history - nobody knows.
They are getting on now, where other things need $ spent on them too.
On LPG the heads have a habit of shitting themselves.
Have a search on TB42 heads. EG Grimbo for example,.

my patrols motor (tb42 carb petrol only) shit itself just before 300000. i owned it for 2 years serviced properly but you never know what the previous owner has done
. in the 3 years the starter died $520ish, water pump $250ish, alternator (now has mod 140 amp, joys of working at auto elects for a while)$500 around to replace, viscous hub (davis craig) $350ish, temostate and hoses, clutch $750ish rear diff $780, front wheel bearings up to 3rd time already (rarely driven through mud just rock crawlin and any extreme track the parks have
) got the dissy redone points, leads plugs etc radiator recon $200 mine was 40% blocked so get it done sooner than later or itll shit itself for good. the only part that hasnt been rebuilt is the carby but its due
$350+ look around carefully especially powersteer as its costly $100 a pipe so far $200 and still leaks like a seive. oh and $5500 for recon engine. done think this is a dampener on your search just exspect some things to go wrong this has all happened over 3 years. happy hunting

Electronic Ignition & some extractors is a must, LPG if you want to commute.
Driveline is bullet proof, wouldn't hurt to throw new bearings in wheels, diff etc, plenty of second hand parts around.
Head corrodes through into water jacket at No6 on some motors, especially if they haven't run corrosion inhibitor.
TB42 is a tough block, can go to 6500 fine if in decent nick and you keep good oil in it.
I've had mine for 6years now, longest a car has ever survived me

since owning the gq i've realised that when things start to go wrong all hell seems to break loose. maybe lack of maintenance from previous owner not sure. but when it goes it goes
being on a tight budget doesnt help so look at all areas twice. prices above were what i roughly had to pay in qld not all prices will match. some include install also.(diff, clutch, motor recon) love mine to death tho (now nearly all new):P

if you take into account that my suspension was done at home saving of a couple a $100 (4" springs,30mm spacers, new shocks, steering dampener, lower control arms, off set bushes, front steering rod, extended brake lines, extended diff breathers ) it's still close to 3 grand this is another cost to think of! thanks jimbo so far all good just power steering is given me the shits after the recon it was supposed to be fixed they so called pressure tested and it still leaks
oh well wheelin goes on
