my lil brother is looking for a duel cab 4x4 and is mainly considering a triton or hilux 98-2003 wich are some strenths and weekneses of these two trucks i know the triton 2.8d is a better motor than the hilux 2.8 and 3.0 but what about the 3.0l v6 is that a good motor and how is it on fuel and power.

im not much of an authority, but i would be going the triton personally. from what ive seen/heard the IFS is very good, and a lot here would tell you its better than the hilux one as well.

as far as i know the 3.0 V6 is the same thats in the Pajero, but you may wanna check that.

Tritons look very tough as well, especially with a set of muddies on em.

Not quite true! The later 3 ltr is a 24 valve hi tech motor. It has curved pistons as opposed to flat ones on the old Pajero 3 ltrs. Simply giving it more horsepower (109kw - 136kw). Think the actual Triton motors are made in Thailand with the Triton , so their engine is down a bit on power (133kw). The Triton will do him well.

The 3ltr is excellant in the sand - all 3 diesels are 'average' with the mitsy 2.8 coming out slightly ahead.

As far as value for money, quality, ride and performance, the triton is hard to go part, but it doesnt have the 'reputation' of the hilux... why does the hilux have a repuation, god knows.

Only guessing here, but the economy will be noticibly improved of a 3ltr paj which seems to average about 15ltrs around town and down to 12-13 on a trip.

The 2.8 paj motor was never renowned for its brilliant economy, its not dissimular to the petrol.

I have the turbo oil burner - GLXR. Pulls well, decent load, easy over 600km on a tank weekday driving, over 700km country driving.

At the time I priced it, had heaps more for your dollar compared to Toyo etc. Also has much better warranty.

Have heaps of fun in my truck, stock standard, and have out shone a new Lux at Appin. (May have been the driver, didn't want to scratch it, but that's a Toyo driver for ya :D ).
I love going around to the school and watchin the kids run and scream. They don't know i am using blanks! -FG

can anyone give me some fuel economy figures for the v6 in citty and highway driving and what problems start occering in these motors after 100 000k's?

i can give you any info you want on one
but hey im trying to sell mine atm so u may consider me bias

fuel is 450 to 500 a tank round town or high way makes no difference
not even bigger tyres does

they are by far the best ifs vehicles i kno of
very strong lots of flex
and the v6 is the fastest in its market by far
basically i love mine and wouldnt sell it if i didnt have to

yeh i remember enquiring about yours nice, can but my bro is after a deisel do u know much about the 2.8d any problems i should look for and how do they go in the sand?

i test drove on last year as i was interested in the cheaper fuel prices
they go 4 ever on a tank

but i found them to be slow
they dont have any lag but id say they are compareable to a 2.4 lux

i decided to keep the v6 as i didnt think the diesel would cut it on the sand and would annoy me round town

for my money id buy a navara if i wanted deisel .... hate to say it

I'm getting 12-13L/100km mixed town/highway(travelling from Melb east to west for work) Not much better on the highway. Problems after 100K, none yet, 102,319km so far. Still pulls well, no smoke, no drama's at all...
I wish my lawn was EMO, then it would cut itself...

I've owned a '99 2.8 dual cab NA triton for about two years now- I very rarely use over 10Ltrs per hundred kays even when fully loaded up with camping gear (I run 31's). They go pretty well for a na diesel- although I have extractors 2 1/4 zaust, finer filter and snorkel- mine cruises on 2750 rpm at 100 kph- There isn't much between my triton and a mates 2.6 petrol bravo in terms of acceleration.
I think the main thing to look closely at is the manual gearbox- it's probably the weakest link in a triton- tends to grind a bit when cold and doesn't have the smoothest shifts (but what 4x4 manual gearboxes are smooth?).
Overall it's been a very reliable vehicle and it has gotten myself and a couple of mates outta trouble a few times- problem is that I now have a bub on the way and need more room (unless I get roof racks complete with baby seat harness ;) .

AFAIK, Tritons in Oz have never had Super Select. Their transfer is commonly called Easy Select (no centre diff/"full time 4wd" option) and I expect some have auto hubs, some have manual hubs.

yeh i have noticed they don't have the hub switch so u just change to 4wd with the low range shifter

I Have a '98 2.8 triton dual cab 4x4 and I am getting 10l/100km as I live in the territory I do alot of off road and bitumen work and I also have a 120l long range tank on a recent trip from Darwin to alice whilst sitting on about 120 km/hr I got 1190km out of the full tank.

I guess they will follow all the others and give you bloody carpet inside the thing except for the basic model that has no power windows etc etc....
