I was out with some others from the forum and this happened to the other Pajero
What went wrong, what could have been done to fix, interested in case this happens while I'm on tour.
Vehicle is a 3lt V6. To get out of the area we had to tow (with a locked 80 series cheers known2) and every now and then jack up and shove the axle back in.

Its a gen1.
It could drive BUT the conditions (wet clay) meant that the vehicle had to be towed up the hilly sections (which it could have driven in 4wd but not 2wd)
Not sure about the circlip, or work done to the axle (not my vehicle), just concerned that it is a comon/ potential problem and don't wish to be stuck at cape york with a similar thing happening to my Gen1.

As far as I'm aware a Gen 1 doesn't have the snap ring in front of the wheel bearing. I think what's happened is that the bearing has collapsed and the whole axle has slid sideways through the knackered bearing and bearing collar.
In a Gen 2 there is a snap ring and thick collar in front of the bearing so if the bearing craps itself it's virtually impossible for the axle to slide out (unless the bearing is totally disentegrated).
Still that axle doesn't look too healthy...................looks like it's been gaulled from spinning in bearing rubble ??
You should be able to get a 2nd hand one from a wreckers for about $150 or if the axle is still ok replace the bearing and all should be sweet.
There are 4 x 8mm bolts that hold the axle assembly to the diff housing so if you snap an axle it still won't slide out unless those bolts sheer.

I thought everyone else would be taking photos, so I didn't take any.
If it is only wheel bearings, maintance would be good prevention.
A new set of bearings and you could prob fix it on the trail?
the vehicle was towed like this, so I think the axle and diff housing were rs (but the owner thought this was better than the whole car missing in the morning)
