3ltr gq's
same motor as vl dunnydoore so if the motor shits itself you could buy another one running for a few hundred $$
but yeh i have seen a few up in the 300,000 mark still going strong.
i think they are a little underpowered for a large car tho

Fuel economy on the 3 litres is MUCH better than a 4.2 - something like 30-40% better economy (as expected by the engine capacity).
As such, with fuel prices so high it bears some consideration, and fuel is not going to be getting any cheaper.
Offroad they have less grunt but shorter gearing helps compensate.
Pity the Mav never came with a 3 litre in the shorty - I'd swap for one and EFI transplant real quick.

not sure if they are all efi as a mate purchased one a few months ago and it was carby. it was a 90 model i think.
but everything else was the same.

Diffs are 4.3 ratio, not 4.6Beastmavster wrote:Diffs are same, just 4.6:1 ratio.
Gearbox is the same size as the commodore one, thus significantly weaker than the 4.2 GQ one.
Having said that, the commodore/skyline box was never a weak box to begin with.

I've got an Rb 30 moter in mine. Yes they are better on the fuel. They are a bit under powered. Got a set of 35 tyres on mine. Which kind of kills it on the highway, but works better around town. Out bush works really well in low range.Think I will change too 4.6 diff ratios when the lockers go in Got 260000km on the clock and its still going strong no smoke uses so little oil I don't even need to top it up inbetween 5000km oil changes. one of guys at the club as put a big turbo and efi on his the gear box has so far let go once after lots of abuse.
If you are not to fussed about winning races and would like to use less fuel the Rb 30 engined patrol is good buy.

Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

278,000 is an average to high miler even for an early GQ; it's definitely not low mileage anyway. You could easily get a dual fuel 4.2 wagon for less than that, and I would expect to find a 3.0 for even less.jo_shnz wrote:what kind of fuel econ do they get?,coz they would be injected if theyre a vl motor
i was looking at one with 278,000kms on it for $7000 does this sound good,or are they alot cheaper due to having a 3ltr
Then again, maybe with the fuel economy issue the worm is turning a bit and the 3.0s are getting more pricey. Even so, $7000 seems like a lot, and a decent, early, stock GQ should be under $5k now even if sellers want more.
With regards to the EFI, I think what Beastmavster was saying is not that the 3.0 patrols have EFI, but that it would be easy to swap EFI onto them since it's a skyline/commodore motor.

GQ
Just sold my 3.0, clean 180,000ms New EFS 3" lift Hi flow turbo and intercooled for $6500 very hard to sell them coz they are not the preffered 4.2.
Just before turbo I drove it very gently from canberra to melb and got 21L/100 on 33's.
Motors will go forever and are cheep should you need a replacement.

I paid $8000 for mine about 18 months ago...in immaculate condition with 190000 on it. Since then have installed extractors, 2.5 inch exhaust, snorkel, removed restriction plate from intake and got it dynod. Have got 13.55 l/100k out of it on one run ...but the norm is about 14-16....with about 19 towin camper. Exhaust and intake mods have increased performance considerably...still runnin standard 31s

Re: GQ
That sounds like really hihg fuel usage for a 3 litre.... something like 16-18 is more normal for highway work. You'd get that out of a 4.2 on a highway trip.Brunsy wrote:Just sold my 3.0, clean 180,000ms New EFS 3" lift Hi flow turbo and intercooled for $6500 very hard to sell them coz they are not the preffered 4.2.

I ran up 450 thou on one prior to my 2.8 turbo deisel. I sold it fairly cheap to a family wanting a beach hack and its still going some 9 years later on the original motor. They dont do any where near the kays per year that i was doing but it still gets used on a regular basis, Like the 2.8 its saving grace is that slick shit off a shovel 300 zx gearbox. You can really hold the motor in the otimum torqure range without dropoff due to its slick shifting nature. Not as fuel efficient as you may think but definitely better than the bigger petrol engines.
Power was adequate for the combo but i often wondered about fitting the skyline efi setup to it.

There is a restrictor built into the isolation gasket between carby and inlet manifold.....it looks like a half moon shaped thingy with an enclosed end ...and the side opening facing away from the motor. I found it from somewhere that it needed to be removed...but in fact it should be cut off level with bottom of gasket ....removal completely leads to idling problems. Also my inlet heater was stuffed too ...so I just turfed it and cleaned up things generally. I reckon this alone gave my truck another 8-10 horsepower, which in a 3 litre is a good gain
also while carby is off make sure second throat is not gummed up and moves freely.
hope all this helps
Cheers Keith
Now all I want is sumone to buy our camper

I was thinking the same thing, i was gona put $800 on both when they come out in about a month. Also, i know where i can get EFI for one or these motors for about $350 out of a VL. All u need to do is supply a fuel pumpBeastmavster wrote:Probably worth around $1000 as a set if you can find a buyer.
So that leaves at least about 100% profit for the wrecker. He'll probably sell the motor for $1000 and the gearbox for $500.
in a GQ the 2.8lt is an excellent motor. Around town it was a nicer car than my current TD42 before the turbo was fitted......
Offroad I can't tell you as I didn't push mine hard offroad but it did it easy with in low range.
