If this isn't the work of troll and you don't get a desirable outcome it will be time to kick a stink. Nissan in Europe actually recalled the effected models and changed the engine. (this is according to some owners of vehicles who have posted before).

Nissan Australia might need a kick in the right direction. The vehicle has been extremely sucsessful here and they should look consider recalling those effected for full donk changes.

Let us all know how you get on.

nissan replaced one last week with 140,000kms on it out of warrenty

they know they have problems.

they are giving everyone the same as me in may..

a new long motor and reuse your turbo, waterpumps, altenator etc etc.

basically you get a new block, crank pistons, and complete head assy.

mine did 81000kms too before blowing up

cracked pistons is the end result, putting a new set of pistons in will only do the same thing again.

the early motors are different to the late 2000 onwards ones..

different oil spray patterns to cool the piston crowns as well as differnt oil pressure / temp sensors.

usually they break #1 cylinder

mine had 3 cracks in #1 (and a hole where the cracks met)
and definately a crack in 2 and 4, and possibly 3 also

hence nissan give owners a long motor and reuse all their accessories, i paid to have my turbo cleaned and new bearings /seals fitted thru the dealer ($700). the new engines also come with a new ECM that is required for the extra oil sensors etc etc

This is my first post and I'm quite interested in the outcome of Boof's GU. Mine is a 2000 model 3.0L TD and has covered 167000kms trouble free so far. :D

Mine is a 2000 as well but a Nov build which I think is in the period where the mods had already been done. Not really sure but I do have a larger sump and my Maint booklet has had the oil capacity's changed by stickers add ins.

My service book doesn't indicate any mods though so I am thinkin factory done but the booklet wasn't rewritten just modded.

Have a look at yours it may be the same.

Good news.
Just had a call from nissan and they are replacing the motor with a new long motor 2003 model.
They said that the motor had blowen a hole through No1 cylinder.

Regarding the new sum , Nissan is supposed to replace the sump to increase the oil volume but some bright spark had a good idea to shorten the dipstick. This to nissan was a quick and easy fix.
So every body out there that has got a early 2000 3ltr make sure that nissan changes your sum and this might reduce the chance of this happening to your $15000 motor

Ah well mine is on 98,000. I am tossing up extended warranty. I have a 5000k trip at Xmas and the last thing I want is a blown donk. I will be towing too.

Could be a anxious few weeks waiting for the time bomb to go....

Same engine but it has been fixed from the end of 2000 on. I wouldn't let the issue with early realease GU Patrols worry you too much.

Hey Guys,

Just replaced my aged 1989 Pathfinder with a 06/2003 GU Patrol 3LTD. From the above thread how can I tell if my engine would be affected by the ongoing issues.

It has 51,000kms on the clock and I have another 2.5 years on Warrenty.

Thanks All,

Gez I'm glad I didnt buy the 1998 Model for 10K less. Might have cost me the difference for a new engine !!!

to my mind this just confirms that when you try to cut corners on costs when engineering parts.... you'll only spend more in the long run.

But it does make me wonder... how rigorous [or not] was the testing Mr Nissan did with these early engnes. I would've thought they'd do hundreds of thousands of km when testing engines and new parts before putting them into production. But it would appear that on these early engines they must've only done a couple hundred thousand at most as these parts on the early engines are struggling to get to that distance before complaining...

Some things never change. Landrover did this 20yrs ago with Defender. They turboed the 2.5 n/a into the 19J and uprated the pistons, also oil sprayed them. Not a DI motor but it cracked pistons too, on a lot of engines especially if used hard. Landrover had British Leyland hanging round their neck and had no money for developement but I don`t know what Nissans excuse is. However Nissan in UK replaced a lot of ZDs. Guys with that engine were getting them replaced at the slightest hint of a problem. Wonder if Nissan uprated the pistons. Maybe not They prolly just needed some more cool oil on them :D

Sorry, Not sure what year, but I did look at a 199X model which had a 3L TD I'm sure. The newer model with Warrenty won me over though. My last good car was a real lemon and hence drove bombs for the past 3 years to get over it.

Thanks
