What vehicle have you snatched with your zook?

Post by HotAe92 »

Hey all,

I was just wondering, as most of the trips ive been on of late have been with larger cars than the zook. I have all the recovery gear, but havent had to snatch a single vehicle yet. So if worst came to worst, would i be able to snatch something like a surf to a patrol?

Feel free to post up what vehicle you have snatched, the situation (i.e. mud, sand etc), whether u have had modifications (i.e. motor, driveline) which would have aided the snatch recovery, and whether you snatched on standard 'tow' points. Pics would be good aswell if you had them.

Cheers

I snatched a 60 series with a 350 chev out of a storm water catchement area.

It took about 3 pulls to move him and then flat to the floor to pull it out.
This was Bunyip's 60 off the forum so i have witnesses :P

This was in a WT Sierra with 4agze

Thought the car was going to snap in half though

I have pulled him out from Snow and Mud too on separate occasions.
Also another 60 from mud @ Parbrals (sp)
2 GQs from Mud @ Bullock Paddock
1 GQ that had driven over a wombat hole that then caved in Somewhere near Williamsdale
1 Jeep Wrangler in mud, then again 5 mins later Bullock Paddock
1 Kia Sportage ... not very far at all busted Tcase mount on Powerline shortcut loose steepish with some lumpy rocks
1 Pajero thingie on Powerline Shortcut as above
1 S2 Disco out of a swamp down the coast near Mogo
1 GQ Shorty from a muddy soup hole near the Quarry
1 GQ Shorty same owner as above managed to park on top of a tree stump somehow. No wheels touching ground.

Think thats it... You all know who you are..

Most of these were not actual snatches. I just tractored them out in 1lo, S3 gears, f&r lockers, 32" Mongrels @ 10psi or less.. Birfield Rings and not using too much steering lock probably saved cvs more than once.
Also never snatch when your in reverse .... and please please please dont use the U shaped tie down on the front of your sierra ever..

pulled out a gq patrol 4.2 disel out of mud, was sitting on the diffs, what makes this good is i was running road tyres, sagged springs and a 1L.

i had to reverse back beside him to get enough speed to snatch him

I pulled an 80 series up a small hill. road tyres, hills and mud don't mix. The snatch did kill my rear tow point thoe. Needed a big run up too.

I had 3 busted and 1 working Zuk (Mooses) all strapped together behind me whilst I pulled them up out of a track in the Otways in the middle of the night. It was sort of fun but it could have been a much longer night if we hadn't made it out

Not really a snatch, more of a tow-out since I had to stay a long way away from the bogged Discovery V8. Its driver had strayed onto a gypsum pan (think in terms of a dry saltlake) near Shark Bay and broke through the crust.

Digging out of the slush can be impossible, by the time we happened along in our box-stock 1.3l LWB Sierra, it was sitting on the diffs. I had to keep Zuke off the pan to avoid doing the same thing, so two lengths of chain and a nylon tow rope from my towbar to his did the trick. Slowly, very slowly and gently, but it worked and the Disco was reversed out.

Also snatched a couple of other Sierras (no challenge!) and a 45 Cruiser with a cactus front diff. And I must agree, this is an unusually interesting thread! :D

Cheers - Longbaser.

My second ever outing out, we hit some nice bog holes filled with water. Me in my 4AGE Sierra with 30" MT/R's, thinking I was invincible in the mud because of last time we were out (less water, more mud) decided to crawl through a big mud pit. Did that relatively easy. Low range 1st gear. Stop in the middle and do a wheel spin to get the mud flying  and drove out the other side.

My mate in his stock v6 Vitara with all terrains drove in and got bogged. Managed to reverse back out eventually. I plowed straight back into it and then decided to reverse through a different part of the bog to see if it was shallower for his Vitara. Going backwards and slow, my Sierra went through but suddenly stopped about a metre from the other end. All 4 wheels were spinning and my attempts to gun out of it just made my little baby sink deeper and deeper until the water was up above my rims.

My mate navigated around the bog pit through some trees, hooked me up, and then snatched me out in 3 goes. The second snatch just yanked my front tires into the ruts my rears had created and I still couldn't get out but the third finished the job. This was our first ever snatch for both of us and damn was I impressed by how well the straps work. Damn glad he had bought a snatch the week before as well.

Note to self. My car is not invincible in mud. Took a hit to the ego that day.

Whats the best method of snatching a bigger vehicle with a zook?

As i have tried a 60 series on the beach and went airborne on the end. result 60 moved about 1 inch.

Moose - I think you will find it was on Vic Range you pulled the Mav and 80, was nice work ;) considering you had more diff clearance than the Mav and 80 combined
