Would anyone have the K&N part number for their drop in air filter for the 4d56 TD and 4m40 engines? I checked K&N's website in the US and they only have filters for the gasoline engines.
I did a search and could not come up with the required info.

as far as i know they dont make one.
i was looking for one for mine and couldnt get one.
i ended up buying as pod and ataching it inside the air box with a hose clamp. works quite well.

I was able to secure the K&N part numbers from the local K&N distributor and confirmed these in K&N's web site.
4d56TD - K&N part number E-2871
4m40TD - K&N part number 38-9207
The E-2871 is on-stock according to their US site. Unfortunately the one for the 4m40 is not.

Mine 4M40 K & N one has C092A12 stamped on it. They do work but some may say not as well as paper filters, some people have seen a fine film of dust on the ducting from the filter to the engine, I kept a close eye on mine with the V6 and it apperas to be working.

I use a Finer Filter foam element and have had no worries with it. I do service it every 10-15 thousand km and have never had a problem with dust getting past. Most foam filter dust problems are caused by lack of sealing oil or improper cleaning/fitting. Being a motorcycle mechanic and enthusiast for over 20 years, I have seen the worst an incorrectly serviced filter can do. The K&N style units are less restrictive than the foam units and are better suited to on road or racing applications. The foam filters excell in dirt and mud. The paper element style is a cheap and effective filter for most situations and usually a quick tap of the filter will keep you on the move. Some can even be washed out -eg- some genuine Toyota paper filters. All in all I believe that a correctly maintained foam filter is the go for my situation and also have run one in my Impreza for over 100k km with no problems at all. If I was going on a big trip I'd throw in a spare paper element as a 'just in case' measure and also for when the foam element is being serviced.
