Cooper stt's or st's?? your thoughts?
Cooper stt's or st's?? your thoughts?
Hi all,
First time here, was wondering if anybody is running cooper tyres, either ST's or the new STT's, and what you thought of them? I am looking at new tyres for my GQ and have 33x12.5x15 Khumo's currently....do about 60% on rd 40% off road, and tow a camper trailer for majority of our trips.
Am open 2 other tyre suggestions too..Thanks. Bundygirl70

I've ripped 2 sidewalls on my STs on the last 2 trips ! The new STTs have thicker sidewalls & I've heard a couple of good reports from mates who use them.
I had MTRs on it before though they seemed to wear rather quickly , but they've got tuff sidewalls, excellent on the rocky stuff & have good road manners too .... Pretty ordinary in the mud though

More poke = More smoke!!!
I run Cooper STs 285/75 16 (33s) on my GQ.
Plenty of people will have their own opinions on what tyre is best, but work out what your priorities are - Mileage? Cost? what type of offroad you do the majority of - rock, gravel, sand, mud?
Unfortunately I do too many Kms on the black stuff for anything too aggressive, so chose the ST's as a good compromise. Good mileage (30,000ks so far and no where near half worn), not too noisy on road.
As an all terrain, they work well offroad, but tend to clog up quickly when in the mud. I've got a few minor cuts from rocky surfaces too.
The Coopers have a strong sidewall - I've aired down at times and not really noticed any big difference in side wall bulge.
Would I buy them again - In a word: yes.

STT's are a nice tyre, though wear is average. You can rely on them, I have done some terrible roads with a very well loaded up GU. We traveled 3000km last week offroad and not one puncture.
They have done close to 10,000km on my GU now and I would say they are 60-70% tread left.
Very reasonable sound levels onroad, great traction off but watch the rocks, only a few hard climbs of scratching around in shale etc and the tread blocks have been quite badly torn and worn.
But for an offroad touring tyre, I couldn't ask for better!

Not sure what size yours were, but Coopers are recalling and replacing certain 285/75/16s built between apr?04 and feb06 (new for old). Whilst no I've got no definitive answer, I believe the fault is a sidewall issue.
my new ones are on order
They weren't within the manufacturers recall list ! Oh yeah, they're not even 6 months old yetof4x4 wrote:Ouch!GU BUG wrote:I've ripped 2 sidewalls on my STs on the last 2 trips

I Had a nail go through one of my STT's kinda on the corner of the tread where the side wall meets the tread. Small hole easy to fix NOT!
Tyre guys ( I took it to two cause I didn't believe the first guy) could not repair it because of the new fandangled cross ply. Apparently it moves as the tyre flexs and causes any plugs to leak air. Bullshit huh!

I'd try this question in general tech rather than the nissan section.bundygirl70 wrote:Hi all,

Then again, there are a lot of tyre threads so you could do a search.

This is not legal advice.
ST V STT
Have ST on my Disco, most of our off road is rock and shale. Like most tyres hugew improvement off road if you lower the pressure from highway. Couldn't believe just how much it helps. Also find in clay if I drop to around 32psi tyres throw the mud out much better.
Very happy with them (2nd Set) probably will go STT next time as the tread does cop a few slices and cuts each trip. (Now over 40,000km and plenty of tread left)
Great all rounder and easy to live with on road aswell.
