hilux timing chain cover leak.

Post by BadLux »

Hey my hiux has developed a bad leak from what looks like the bottom of the timing cover. What sort of a job is it to replace the gasket??

the gasket on the timing cover is pretty much there to protect from dust. so replacing the gasket will not fix the leak. I would say that the front seal has gone! and thats where the oil is coming from. (after all, there shouldnt be oil in the timing belt cover) hate to be the bearer of bad news...but someone has to do it.

Crank seal letting oil from the pump come through, or a cam seal in the head. God forbid it would be a leaking head gasket from a gallery.

Either way, you have to pull off the timing cover, which isn't hard its just time consuming, and have a squiz. If its the crank seal then you got to pull off the pump and install a new seal, if its the cam its much the same job but easier.
