Fuel Consumption

Post by GURU »

G'day all,

Getting a GQ with TD42 (non turbo), for daily drive and tow rig, currently stock including the cheese cutter tyres (32" skinnys) was wondering what sort of fuel consumption I would get around town as a daily drive?

Also considering going to 33's or 35's down the track, I have a set of 4.3 diff ratio's to rectify the gearing, will I lose too much fuel consumption from the bigger rubber??

There are plenty of posts regarding this subject and expect the standard "search" replies.

Most posts that I've seen will report back anything upto 14 litres per hundred. I seem to get better than this - driving style maybe? (my felt hat would sit on the back shelf if it had one... ;) )

From personal experience, I bought mine 2 years ago as a NA TD42, with 31" skinnys etc. I was getting about 10.5 to 11 litres per hundred - mostly city driving. i have since found that my speedo was calibrated for 33's so you may need to make some adjustments for this.

It is still non-turbo and I now have 33s on it, on 8" wide offset rims (plus extra weight like winch, dual batteries, etc). The mileage figures come back at 11.5 to 12 litres per hundred. This is still running the 4.1 diffs so it's a real slug on hills.

I don't use it for towing so i can't comment on the fuel usage.

Hope it helps.

Mine averages about 8.5 km/l while using it for commuting to work (35km of 100kmh highway driving) and general driving around town, *if* I take it easy and stick to 100kmh, or 110kmh at most. Any faster and it gets noticeably more thirsty. Same deal if you drive around town with your foot nailed to the floor. That's on 32 x 11.5 x 15 BF Goodrich ATs at 34psi (they were on it when I got it, and they were brand new :D ). I've managed to get less than half that mileage in low range in deep dry sand though.

I make sure I keep the oil/filters changed every 5000kms without fail, with a bottle of 'Stop Leak' at every change (it used to blow blue smoke on start-up before I started using this). I also use Moreys fuel treatment additive (when I remember). Nice clean air filters too.

My speedo is out of calibration too. Haven't been bothered to get this fixed yet, but I suppose I really should
