A good buy is a 85 swb with the sports option, factory jerry can holder, lsd, suspension seats, spotties and the mandatory extra stripes.
Most have been modified by now a 2.6 carby can fluff and fart on acute angles if it aint tuned properly. The other option is the 2.3 turbo diesel with 5.29 diff ratio's. Some guys have fitted the Magna EFI system to the 2.6 with great results, others have also gone with a turbo. Marks 4wd Adaptors also do a Crudadore V6 conversion. It all depends on what you want mild to wild. Basically a 2" s/l + 2" b/l you can run 33"s but power maybe an issue. ARB locker is available for the rear and Detroits for the front and rear. Heaps of shocks, springs and other aftermarket parts available for the older Paj. They were very popular in their day so 2nd hand parts aren't a problem but they are getting on a bit now.
These will give you some incentive

How much are you looking to spend?
When i sell both my other cars, i am hoping i will have about 10 grand to spend on it, thats customising too at the moment (obviously if there is one out there with everything on it i want already i will spend 10 but if not i have to leave money for the fun part. I have seen a few around in stock form that have quite a bit of potential for about 7ish, 3 left to fiddle with

I wouldnt try to talk you out of the Paj if thats what you wanted but if you are thinking about a Bundera then i realy do think this would be a better buy mainly because of the solid axle front. There is a lot more scope for mods with a solid axle.
I beleive my mate wants around $8000 for his and i also think it may be the Sports option that Frank has mentioned as it has stripes, jerry can holder and the seats.

It really depends on what you want to do with it.
Ruff is right though there is more scope for mods with the Bundera and more aftermarket parts. Also it shares a lot of Hilux and Cruiser parts.
The people who build up Pajero's are die hards and do it to be different to the normal Toyo's, Nissans etc.
I bought mine mainly for a family tourer but as time went on it's become more of a toy, it's not my daily driver anymore. Once I get to the limit of mods with the IFS I may just do a SAS just to have something different.
The pic is of an 85 sports model we met on a Toolangi trip a few years ago.

Well there ya go eh..............
That one has a 2" b/l + 2" s/l and runs 33" BFG muds he nearly drowned it in a massive boghole that day (the pic is him being snatched out of it).
The rear bar is standard you can tell from the profile they taper in at the centre to where the D hook is bolted to the rear crossmember.
The rear bar on the Gen 2 is a horror story for offroading but it's not alone there, it's on my list of to do's (rip it off and get a solid slimline custom one fabbed up).
If only they had a front live axle. Actually Mitsu released a Jeep looking thing way back in 1973 I think they kept making them up to 86 or 88. It was called a Mitsubishi Jeep and looked like a CJ7 I think their military used them. They had a leaf sprung front, I looked into the driveline of these things and nothing whatsoever is compatible with a Paj. Different diffs, gearbox, t/case etc

Yep, that's me!!
Exactly the same as that one in the picture.
I have a weber carby on mine and it goes really good, doesn't stall on hills either.
It's got the LSD in the rear that works really good. Better than my mates '99 model hilux one.
