The 1:25k and 1:100k NSW maps ferrit's talking about were made by me and are free. You can get them via torrent from here. They're about 2Gb to get both sets. I've made a 1:50k set for vic, but can't make them available just yet.
Thats fantastic festy.

QLD would be great but even NATMAP dont cover the whole state down to 1:25,000.

What OS?

We looked into this in my last job, and couldn't do it. Windows is forever writing to and from the HDD. Solid State drives don't have anywhere near the read and write cycle life of a HDD, so you can start to run into reliability problems.

I don't know if you can boot your OS from a key, and configure to page swap on HDD? That way, if the HDD develops bad sectors, you should be able to tell the OS to mark the sectors and not use them.

I have set up a HP thin client as a net cafe machine in the canteen at work
Cant remember which model it is but it has a special cut down version of XP on a flashcard and no HDD. I think it can run without a server
No bells and whistles only basic os
Will look into this more today
How did you go finding out about this cut down version of XP? I to am looking into setting up a desktop in my car, I am also looking into shutdown/startup controllers for this setup in a car.

For a cutdown version of XP check out http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

This uses Windows Embedded, which is a cutdown version of XP which Microsoft use in their RIS server stuff.

This boots from a CD and paging happens in a RAMDISK - so no wearing out a flash drive.

I have also got it to boot from USB and again a RAMDISK is used.

The boot speed is not the best but usable.

I tried it early on. If your spatial profile data is good then it works pretty well. Keep in mind that you need good data for the area you are viewing. most of what you can get for free isn't very high resolution.

You have to combine the profile data with the map area, then generate the actual map files. It takes some time to do the number crunching.

You used to be able to download a demo version of it for nix. It's not really all that useful - you are probably better off learning to read a map properly.
