getting a rover.... help

Hi guys I am looking at getting a rover, and I would like some advice from you people that have owned them. I only have about 8 grand to spend. What should I buy disco/range.

What sort of economy would be expected from each. Td and petrol.

What should I steer clear of

I realize these are generalized question but a little help would be great. Also I have an offroader so this will be a on road car.

First thing we need to know is, will it be an everyday driver, tourer or dedicated offroad tuff truck?

For 8k you are limited to a late classic rangie or V8 / early 200tdi disco, as long as the tdi is lowish k's should be ok for that price range.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

i have a spoa mk patrol, so the rover will be a everyday car.

i have seen a tdi with 135000 ks for $7500 is this good and are these good cars or should i stick to the v8

why get a big 4wd just to drive on the road?
if its room your after get a van, much cheaper to run.
it'll be slow on the road, slower to stop, and it just plain upsets me seeing a big beautiful 4wd never seeing offroad

If its genuine k's then it will be good, what year ? i'm guessing 92-93 200tdi lt77 5spd? The 200tdi is a great motor if serviced correctly, the 5spd box could be a problem if not rebuilt already but @ $7500, if its good in all the other aspects i would buy it .

for 8 grand i will completely repair my 1989 range rover and throw in ten cases of beer :D

edit: and thats with a fully rebuilt auto and tcase and front and rear diff :D

defender, i would love one but i need a more on road car. i still need info on the ecconomy of the v8 and the tdi.

200 Tdi in standard and underpowered/ underfuelled trim was good for 38mpg, if you make them go real hard they 'plummet' down to about 28mpg. But at least they will then climb hills!!!
300Tdi will easily get 28mpg, 10 litres / 100km. Auto 300 Tdi will use slightly more, about 25 to 27 mpg average.

V8, auto or manual, driven like there is an egg under the gas pedal will still only get around 14mpg, thats 20LITRES/ 100KM!!!!!
On a long run, driven sensibly, I got 17mpg out of my RR 4.6 auto with 32" mudders on.

Go the Tdi, at least you can make your own biodiesel if $$$ get tight!

or get a disco / rangie on gas. My Disco on gas is as cheap to run as our 3.0L nissan skyline which got 10L to 100ks.

Just get one that is already converted (so you save yourself 3grand) and you get the 'power' as well as the V8 tone.
