considering a 2nd hand GU later this year

Hi guys.

I've had old trucks (>20 yrs) for a long time now and am fed up wondering what's going to break next So I'm considering upgrading to a 5 or so yr old GU at the end of the year I'm after some advice though, have done a bit of a search and learnt a bit but still like more info

I'll be chasing either a 4.2 td or petrol with gas installed and am pretty flexible as to whether ute or wagon. Wagon I suppose would be slightly more practical for me in the end. What I need to know is;

* How does the 4.5 petrol in the GU's handle lpg I know theoretically the valves should be suitable but anyone heard reports of lpg causing wear/ failures

* Those with lpg do you run lpg full time or 2 to every 1 of fuel etc I run my old 4runner on lpg full time but if it breaks I'll just go buy a new hamster

* Diesels in the 4.2 will probably need some major maintenance items at 100k which is about the mileage I'll be looking at. What needs doing around there and what does it cost

* How are the GU's standing up Is it a wise choice as a 5yr old 2nd hand proposition

* I'll be budgeting about 25k... is this realistic

* Anything else I should really consider

Thanks for your help guys I was going to buy a new hilux/ navara cab chassis or similar but wouldn't get much change from 35k. And then they're a pretty big comprimise in terms of strength and I want a live axle ideally I'm not after a 4wd that drives like a road car and I want something bulletproof like a patrol, proven packages. Too much plastic on the mid sized utes Plus 10k saved could go a long way to a house deposit for a young fella like me

but from what you've asked which is a lot i doubt you will find a 4.2 turbo diesel for under 25k a 4.5 on gas you will.

Technical specs of how the 4.5 like lpg alot of them are on it and they seem ok.

personaly pick would be a 4.2 but you really need to ask yourself what you want and not let us tell you what you should buy cause you have a pretty broad scope of what your looking for either ute or wagon diesel or petrol.

so work out what you want first search button will answer alot of your queries and try reading the bible as well that should answer alot of your questions.

I owned a TD42 car (was a gq shorty though). I am pretty sure there is nothing special for any of the service intervals. Just maintenance things as they got older. I would be happy buying one with over 250 000km. My old one had 472 000km and was still going well.
It was probably getting to the stage where the pump needed to be pulled out but it hadnt been touched at all except to do the top plate seals.
And GU's aint real different from the GQ. Just more refined.

That's the whole point morkz I'm pretty easy as to these choices. I don't need the car for work its purely for play. I drive <100km most weeks and really just need a vehicle for the 3 or 4 annual camping getaways

My stuff will fit happily in either a ute or a wagon and whether I can take a couple of mates with me in the back or just the girlfriend in the front doesn't matter either.... I'm not a taxi service Diesel or petrol doesn't matter either..... either goes fine (driven petrols and diesels frequently) I don't need to go fast. And either has acceptable consumption (petrol on lpg that is).

I'd argue that there are a number of 4.2 td's under 25k though

Make sure you check those TD 4.2's out as they are most likly ex mine trucks and arnt worth more than $5000 with the flogging and rust ready to show up. The higher the k's the closer they are to major repairs. By the sounds of your budget the 4.5 petrol will be the go then spend a bit getting it put on LPG. Good luck.

i ended up settling on a 4.5 petrol. i read a lot of discussions about the different engines and the petrol didnt do too bad compared to the diesel.
the diesel costs more to fill, but you use less. the difference between the two i worked out to be a couple of dollars over 100k.
also the diesel is more expensive to service and needs servicing more often.
if i went the diesel then i wouldnt have any money to mod it so the petrol was the better option.
and make sure you dont get a dx ex mine one. i looked at one and it was horrible

sweet thanks mate What sort of consumption do you get from the petrol anyways??? I've read around the 20 - 25/ 100 is pretty common

I'd suggest you buy MY GU !!!

It has a few k's on it but is regularly serviced & although they apparantly cost more to service (oil every 5000 & oil & filter every 10,000 ), you'll get twice as many k's (so long as it's been looked after) out of a 4.2 diesel than you would the 4.5, 4.8 or the time bomb 3.0 litre before they die .

Especially if you plan on doing the odd trip away here & there, then you want nothing but reliability & comfort...the 4.2 Patrol has both !!!

P.S. Stay away from those wholesale car yards with the cheap GU's. They give them a quick detail, bit of a clean & sell them as quick as possible before the rust starts showing up or the engine blows on a test drive

got 17lt per hundred on the highway loaded up in standard trim and 22lt per hundred around town.

havnt tested it out yet with the new tyres and other mods..
