Tow truck: good setup

Post by Spartacus »

ive got a 1997 petrol 80s full time 4wd stock with H/D hayman reese :D

What would be a good setup to tow around a 1.5/2 tonne truck?

things like:
-- Electric brakes
-- Heavy duty suspension__TJM, ARB, Toughdog kits
-- Engine upgrades
-- Tyres

what else should i consider modifying?

It will pull 2 tonne okay, depends on other factors like wind resistance though to, maybe look at:

Cooling system upgrades, maybe bigger rad, thermos etc?

If it's an auto maybe upgrade oil cooler etc?

Electric brakes and air bags or heavy duty rear springs. A radiator proffessional flush. If it has not passed its towing capacity then it should handle it well.

Rear springs will only need to be upgraded if there's significant load on them. If the trailer weighs 1.5T with a ball weight of only 100kg, and there's no significant weight in the rear of the tow vehicle then the rear springs aren't suffering.

If you've got a 2T trailer with 250kg ball weight and 500kg in the back of the tow vehicle then you'll need new rear springs - I wouldn't rely on Polyairs.

Keep an eye on Gross Combined Mass - it can be less than the sum of Gross Vehicle Mass and max trailer weight. But I don't think you'd come close with your 80 Series.

Once trailer mass passes some point (2T?) you're also required to have a break-away braking system.

Cheers,

Scott
