MIG WELDING
got a mig the other week, thought some one might have some tips.
when i use the gas wire and the gas it works well, as good as an ametuer can be.
but using the the gasless wire all i get is splattering. i am using an 8mm silver wire.
i have adjusted the wire speed, and set the amps/voltage to every setting and none seem to make a difference.
i am practicing on some 4mm plate that is very clean bare metal.
any sugestions

With gasless wire you have to reverse the polarity.
The gun needs to be connected to the earth and the clamp to the positive.
The reason for this (this is from the CIG rep) is that 3/4 of your power goes through the pos and 1/4 goes though the neg. The gasless wire is a bit more delicate than normal wire because it is really a thin tube around a flux core. If you use the pos through the wire it disintergrates from the the power passing through it where if the neg is connected most of the currrent is in the work and the wire doesnt blow to pieces.

splatter nearly always to me equated too hot
drop your voltage or use a thicker wire. Increasing your feed rate may sort it, but this means you have to move faster (something I never lked when welding). Better yet: go buy more bloody gas, you don't go buying a four wheel drive to travel to the shops, why would you buy a premium welder to use it for half its capacity.

Yeah I saw that hilux
I have seen that hilux as well. Wonder if he actually drives it off road or just cruises town with it. It looks pretty awesome. Have you seen that white single cab hilulx with 37" MTR's outside Ducks Nuts?
That looks like another town 4x4 as well, but I could be wrong.

I reckon you have a problem with no gas getting to your weld. Put the gun up to your ear and pull the trigger and listen for gas. Be carefull of getting poked in the ear by a length of sharp wire though.

his problem with splatter is with gasless wire , hence there will be no gas noise as the gas is turned off.
on a side not you are sure the wire you are using is actually gasless mig wire

ok i really should clarify what i mean there
there is a lot of other things in steel besides steel... silicon etc... yes that contaminates even mig... those little glassy yellow patches that fall off on top are silicon that comes out of the metal
doesn't really matter which process you use... its the settings and the operator that control the contamination level...
then again when you compare 1st class work with whats on most things it leaves a lot to be desired...

Jap steel is shyte
Down to my last 5 lengths of BHP 32mm black pipe that I use for making roll cages....... dont know what I'll do after its gone .... the jap stuff wont handle bendin all that well, doesnt weld all that well and isnt as strong either.
You guys that dont know your steels wouldnt belive the differance.... its about as differant as chalk n cheese.

Flux core MIG and body panels ..
I only have an ARC welder but I can borrow a MIG to fix up some rust in my dudlux's roof ..
The problem is that the MIG I can borrow is a cheapie flux core only welder .. from what I have read so far flux core is only any good for 1+ mm steel

i thought the steel coming in was taiwanese not jap.it rusts big time compared to bhp. the steel in jap cars is first rate as rust is related to contamination in the steel and jap cars seem to hold up ok. obviouslt\y its a different beast altogether

you carnt change the mig wire to the 0.6mm mild steel this would better suit the sheet metal,
as for splatter cause is its too hot turn it down and should get little or no splatter simple scrapper should come off easy, can get stuff called anti splatter spry from any welding shop

as far as welding panels go, do it with an oxy and no filler rod (except where you blow through), takes plenty of pracyice though, just use a slightly carburising flame and keep youre inner cone 1/8inch off the job and youre molten pool 1/8inch wide, easy!!!!!
As for the mig, gassless will always be second rate no matter how good you get it, I gassless at home for "little sh@t" but anything slightly important I grab a bottle of gas from work. Incedently mig stands for Metal Inert Gas, mag stands for Metal Active Gas. the best and most common welding gas is 98%argon (inert) and 2%carbon dioxide (active), so really, we all mag weld, not mig!
