Firstly - the top. Many places will sell you a top (Customline at Beenliegh, Primus "off the shelf" unit, and others). So ring around and get some pricing.

Secondly - for all your research go to www.campertrailers.org . In the "Manufactuers" section you can visit all the websites to get some ideas of different set-ups. Or, join the Yahoo group for some chat - I'm sure you will find some good info there.

Thirdly - I reckon you'll save yourself some real heartache if you just buy a good second hand unit.

I am in the trade and make camper trailers tops for a few camper trailer businesses around Brisbane. Most are the same, but the prices are sometimes ridiculously different.

give me a call...my number is in my sig line.

I can show you some designs and help make up your mind....and I can also make it alot cheaper than you will get it anywhere else.

Mate of mine (damige on here) built his own.
He has been getting quotes on canvas only
First was southern cross $6500
second Outback in Carrum $5000
(these quotes are if he does 2!)

Tis cheaper to buy a second hand one me thinks.

There are places that sell just the camper section to fit to your trailer, but dont have a link handy.

I could beat that with my hands tied behind my back. I would be suprised if I got above $4000.00 for the bed base upwards. That includes the canvas tent, 8' awning, and the bed base that attaches to your trailer.

Ive been thinking of making my own roof top camper. Bought a tent from ebay for $20, 12ft x 12ft one. Will cut it up for the windows and door and just sew it into spec. Only need the three sides like a wedge !

I am building my own hard floor camper in Toowoomba.

A number of places quoted $4500+ for just the main canvas tent, no awnings.

I have shopped areound and have found 2 more places that will do the main tent section for around $2000, plus a bit more for the awnings.

So it pays to have a look around. But if you want a bolt on option, those Primus ones look the goods on paper anyway.

Cheers
