How many K's are too many K's for a 60 series

Post by gearb0x »

Hey

Ive been looking for a while for a nice affordable 60 series diesel landcruiser

Ive stumbled upon a HJ61 sahara turbo diesel with 390k's, while it appears to be pretty straight i was wondering, how many k's are these cars good for? Apparently this one has been serviced religiously for the last 4 years (before then who knows?) every 5000k's

Phill

Most 2H and 12HT's last to about 450K before they need a rebuild ($4k+) just for engine, + turbo gearbox etc.

Servicing is important and if serviced and maintained religeously as you say then they can quite easily see 500K, but not alot more.

That motor will do 500.....as it is factory....1 million is too many kms....if the roof is not rusty, it is a good buy. Love those old busses...but in all reality, the 80 series is sooo cheap now....like 10k for a 1995 petrol gxl....that 60 would have to be cheap...to better a 4.5 with coils all round...

Agreed. A well looked after 2H or 12HT should breeze half million.

Factory turbo 60's are a funny thing. If maintained correctly, it wouldnt be uncommon to get 500k out of one. 12ht's are a great motor. What sort of $$$ are you looking at?

6500 so far, and looks pretty straight will find out during the week

Hence im concidering such a high milleage vehicle, id like to go 80 series deisel but its a bit too much of a stretch for me atm.

I dont actually do that many k's, around 10000 a year, looking for a tow vehicle, only need to tow to race tracks within an hour or so of home, nothing major

factory turbo diesels are a whole different ball game to the 2f and 3f petrol engines.

I have seen 300k 12HT motors sell for $6500 alone, pulled out of a wreck. If you are getting the rest of the car as well, its good value.

Friend checked out the car today, has a wierd road noise at 100k's sounds like tires, the roof channels have rust starting along and slight bubbles of rust in the sunroof. Front diff pinions need atleast new seals, tfr case is leaking

Not so sure now, cant win. :P

Got mine for $5000 has 418000Kms on it
motor & turbo was rebuilt at around 400K gearbox (auto) replaced last week more as a precaution only had a slight shudder
and i had to do front hub seals and all the brakes when i got it... slip and uni joints are all on the sad side but luckily the body is good except the left rear around the window..and the ding also in the left rear
fuel pumps are another problem in these at this age I don't think mine got the attention it needed when the engine was rebuilt but the word is in the injection industry is that they were never a great design in the first place symptoms of wear in pump/governor linkages is evident if you lightly stab the throttle and it stalls as revs drop or rough idle up to around 1500 revs
anyway govenor spring tension adjusted now and it goes a bit better hoping to intercool and change exhaust soon.....
and that's my story hope it helps
Cheers
