I would say yes to unleaded since the 22r has an alloy head so already has hardened valve seats. Higher octain fuels are usually only make a difference if the engine has been desgned to run on them.

it's probably ok to run on unleaded but if it's pre 1985 then it's designed and tuned for leaded fuel and will probably ping like crazy on unleaded. fiddle with the base ignition timing to find a place where there is no pinging but the power and economy is still acceptable.

it's not a great motor and no matter what fuel you run in it you'll be sad about the performance. the worse news is, the G52 gearbox won't stand up to any more power so if you are going to engine swap, plan a gearbox swap as well at the same time - probably best value is to get an adaptor to put your transfer on the back of the auto that comes with your V6 - if you're buying a front cut you'll get a gearbox anyway.

I'm pretty sure it was 86 or 87 onwards that ALL engines had to be unleaded fueled jigga so that makes yours an unleaded one but that doesn't mean it cant run ok on unleaded. Also in most other western countries they were already using only unleaded which would have used in the 22R too.
Your state motoring bodies, NRMA etc. have all the details regarding which pre unleaded motors are ok for it.
Mate of mine is a yota mech. too, I'll ask him tomorrow.

**sorry mate, so you meant that it would be leaded not "unleaded" as you put in your post?

My old 85 bundera used to run super, when they stopped making it i ran premium, normal unleaded hasn't got enough octane and it used to ping its head off, the valves are hardened so it shouldn't damage the head
