G'day,


Mine's cr@pped itself. I've got the new one and the job doesn't look too difficult.
Any pointers for a half decent chippie but a very amateur mechanic?

Hi there GBC, I'm not that mechanically minded myself but will give most things a try EXCEPT brakes. I did my centre bearing on my 89 D/Cab toyota and was a piece of piss. I probably did it the long way compared to some of the blokes on here that have probably done it a shit load of times but I was in no hurry and took my time. I took the tail shaft out just undo the 4 bolts at either end of the shaft undid the 2 bolts holding the centre bearing bracket to the chassis sat the whole lot up on the bench and went from there you will see very easily how to do it. I can email you the diagrams and intructions from the gregorys manual for you if you like. MAIN THING is to put marks eg liquid paper on where you undo the 4 bolts at either end of tail shaft mark both the tail shaft and the flat flange piece so that when you put back together you dont end up with vibrations. Also did that on the big nut that is on the centre bearing and also the slip joints incase they come apart on yiou when you pull the shaft out. Just take your time. I also used lock tight on all the bolts. Regards Steve M

If your a chippie that probably means you have a nailgun, if you have a nailgun that would mean you most likely have an aircompressor.

Go buy yourself a rattle gun to take off the stake nut. Failing that you can also put the truck in 4wd, lock the front hubs in, chock the wheels and turn the stake nut too, do this before removing the centre bearing mount but.

If you do have a nailgun and compressor but cant afford the rattle gun at least after you have done the job you shoot stuff to celebrate your new-found mechanic skillz.

Buy yourself a 1piece shaft and do away with the centre bearing for good :D

I have been doing away with the centre bearing and fitting a one piece tailshaft in all of my conversions for about 5 years now

Do you know off the top of your head what 1 piece shafts fit from other vehicles to a 94 lux with a 5 speed box and the rear diff in std position?

Any help appreciated - i'm trying to rid myself of the dreaded centre bearing also... :D

Tks to all above for saving me from cab rides to buy gear while the ute was dismembered.
All went precisely to plan - yours not mine. :P

Can get to LCMP this weekend now to watch the tough tracks
