1985 Toyota 60 series...

just wanted to know peoples thoughts on these vehicles. The one i've seen has a 4lt diesel in it. are they well past their used by date or still a good 4x4? What areas should i look out for in these vehicles before potentially buying one?

a good tank of a machine but the rust absolutely kills them especially in the roofs

keep your eyes on the roof gutters, rear quarter panels mainly. that would be where a 60 would rust up first.

But to me, any vehicle that is 20 odd year old can be forgiven for suffering a little cancer here and there. If you know someone who is on the panel beater/spray painting trade get them to have a look as well. They will pick out any bogwork. If not, just take a weak magnet, it will stick to the painted surface alright...but if theres a bogpatch it wont stick.

How bad is the rust in these vehicles in the roof, everyone talks like any rust in the roof is terminal

What makes it terminal?

I ask cause im looking at one thats starting to bubble in the roof channels

I've got an 84 60 series that I bought for parts donation to my 40's, and the rust in the roof of it looked like little bubbles until I put a screwdriver into it. The whole roof guttering is rusted out as well as 2 inches into the roof. Lucky I'm not planning on using the body. I would think to repair it would take some time, if you do it properly, and would probably need to be cut off at the turret. Not something I would want to fix if it was my only car. Other than that, fill it with fibreglass or bog, sand it back, and throw some paint on.
The cancer in mine is only over the rear quarters, so a ute conversion would be ideal, not sure where yours is.

the rust is generally called terminal because it is basically impossible to fix it all the first go. you can cut out the section thats come through, but you cannot fix the parts that are about to come through.

have heard of people having great success with sparying fisholeen in the roof section every 6months, fisholeen doesnt stain the headlining (penatrine does).


I have heard of one 60 series having the entire turret replaced, $2500 for the tureret from toyota, and then probably $2k for fit and paint. so yeh not worth it in an old bus.

The wreckers next to my workshop has a complete turret sitting out the back. Not sure what they want for it. Maybe others wreckers keep them as well? Either way it would be a PITA.

The 60series is a good old truck and off road machine.
Rust as mentioned is a problem with them more so pre 85, but later models still rusted (head liner material in the earlier ones was slightly different and allowed more moisture from the cab into the roof area).
This not to say that the 85 and later models didn't rust in the roof area, mine did. My problem was runnng roof racks with a fair load on them which in turn cracked the sealant between the roof and the body of the vehicle (the roof turret is only spot welded on and sealed with a some sort of sealant like silastic).
Once there is one bubble of rust, expect more to come quickly.
I had my complete roof turret removed and replaced with a new one from toyota, and it wasn't cheep :!:
Other bad rust spot locations are; above rear wheel arches, inside front footwells (if windscreen or door seals have been leaking) and inside the air vent intake area where it meets the firewall if debris builds up in there.
Besides the rust, the only other down fall they had was suspension sagging which would hopefully be modified by now.
