Tyre help

Im asking for the old man.

Mums car needs new tyres, it see's 90-95% road life the rest is either gravel, dirt roads and mum and dad do things like go to bridsville and the like but mainly road work so highway treads will do. looking for milage, quiet ride and good road holding above all else, got 60 thou out of the last highway treads cant rember the brand


its a 1999 Pajero exceed, im in melb can anyone recomend either a good brand/model or a good tyre dealer in SE suburbs

ive searched a bit but not much info here about Highway treads.

Im a fan of kelly tyres. I run them on both 4wd's and havent had an issue yet. Very quiet as well

stick with the original yokohamas that are on there from new, my bosses pajero exceed has 130,00km on the clock and is on his second set and still plentyof tread. he tows a caravan to lismore and back fortnightly and has had no probs with them. ive driven it and it sticks to the road well. i think there 265/75/16

Stock tyre size for that model is 265/70-16. 265/75-16 will fit without trouble, tends to make speedo more accurate than the stock size. Much larger selection available in the larger size.

Personally, I wouldn't take H/Ts to Birdsville.

There's quite a few options in that 20-30% offroad range at the moment that would be quite reasonable.

Definately sounds like they'd want better than a H/T. A decent quality A/T isnt really much worse for wear or fuel economy, and only slightly worse for noise.

You'd find most of the major manufacturers have some form of Road Terrain which is just that little bit more agressive than a Highway Terrain, but not as agreassive as a full A/T. Might be the go for what they want really.

Hankook Dynapro AT-A RF09

etc etc.

Having said that a lot of the "all terrains" look so much like a normal road tyre of a couple of years ago you may as well go to the AT.

Ask yourself a question.. is this REALLY a 50% road 50% offroad tyre? TO my eye it looks like it's barely an improvement over the stock Paj rubber whcih is pretty good for a H/T designated rubber.



That looks like a gravel road would be a challenge for it, and you'd get bogged pulling out of the grassy footy club carpark in the rain. Who does Dunlop think are they kidding?

Something like this Yokie Geolander II would still be no more than 30% offroad in my book, and it's clearly a superior offroad design. These and the Wrangler AT-R's would be the sort of stuff I'd be suggesting if they intend to do more outback work.

I agree with everything you said BM. For me, something like an MTR or a BFG MT would be a 50% on/off road tyre.

From personal experience I wouldn't buy Falken or Bridgestone ATs, but BFG, Kumho, michelin (good but $$$) and plenty of others have good AT tyres on offer.

Because they did real well on the on-road bits, and OK on the off-road bits.

Off-road alone, they didn't do quite so well - but still respectably the way the test was done.

Personally, I wouldn't buy them.

My bro-in-laws rodeo has BFG A/T... they are really slippery on wet roads too not a good thing in a 2+ tonne truck

IMHO the base A/T pattern is a BFG A/T or Cooper ST type tread.

These others look just like road tyres... they are not 'All' terrain tyres.. lol

A mate has got Pirelli Scorpion AT on his Jackaroo V6, & has got over 100k's out of them. They are quiet & surprised me how well they went in the Mud & slush, dirt etc. Have not seen them in heavy rocks but no probs so far. They are never going to be an M/t offroad, but in my opinion they are a good value touring tyre. Each to their own, I suppose.
