I dont know that deep water/mud is out of line.
The OC is shaping up to be a truly international event and like the Rainforest Challenge with its Elephant Mudhole needs a bit of ímpossible'stuff.

I thought with the outback the 1st problem was finishing. I feel for the guys that have put their hard-earned in for virtually no competition time. That hurts but it also ensures that only the best cars and drivers get through

Otherwise it becomes another local event.

kirragc, I can see your point, but I think with these kind of stages that cost big bucks to fix trucks, will only come down to ppl with quite a bit of money or sponsorship who will or only be able to enter......for the others who just rely on their own money and a great experience, you might see a decline in these type of competitors or competitors not even doing the stage which would be a shame...... tough stages are fantastic and I'm sure competitors enjoy them, it is an Outback Challenge to who drives the best and whose truck is the best, but maybe a little bit more thought on having a stage that can be driveable by all, then the challenge is, who can finish it in time....or if they have a stage llike this, keep it last, not half way through.....then competitors can decide for themselves, by will they or wont they....at least they got to compete in all the other stages and no dissapointment....
But anyway...that's my thought... :)

Drafty I havent done OBC. When thinking about it I just couldnt consider the sort of money required. I see the time, effort and cash that mates have put up and I cant play. Having said that Ive seen guys do all of that and get knocked out with equipment failure early but theyyve had another crack.

Sometimes these obstacles serve to take the competition to the next level.
52 DNFs and 1 team who improvise a solution is an acceptable outcome I think.then the reengineering adn innovation that will go into next years cars are what this sport is all about I reckon.

Dont get me wrong Im probably asking for a flaming saying this after a heap of cars get knocked out but if offroad motorsport (or any motorsport) were cheap and easy we would all be doing it.

As you mentioned it does raise the level of competitor and vehicle, but at what cost. You said it yourself " I see the time, effort and cash that mates have put up and I cant play" It shouldnt come down to who has the bigest check book, everyone including yourself should be able to compete without thinking will i have a drivable truck after the event.

From a competitors perspective and i think this has been displayed by the amount of DNS's the risk of destroying the vehicle is to high and there are some seriously competant and crazy guys out there who have said no to this stage. Common sence as displayed by the competitors should have also been used by the organisers on this one.

I understood the idea of this event is to be fully self sufficient for it’s entirety- Meaning he who has the most $$$ isn't necessarily going to win. (that’s why there is 100pt penalty for outside assistance) Tell me this, how are you suppose to fit a spare engine in the back?????

I agree with both Drafty and Mrs Hoon1. I have also seen a lot of crazy driving in very expensive cars.
To be honest I dont think we have any idea what has gone on in the last few days due to the patchy feedback.

If the water/mud was up to Smitty Jnrs chin that puts it around '6 foot deep. I suppose the debate should be about whther the cars competing in this event should be reasonably expected to face something like this.

Does anyone remember the first year they came up against a creekbed wall. It was up to ten feet in parts but a solution had to be found.

There is a diffrerence between 6 foot of water and a 10 foot wall.
And that is on the wall the vehicle is not going to suck in a engine full
of water while the guys figure out the best way to tackle it...

Sorry but I agree.
This is an annual event and is very expensive-
I think it would be best to allow those who spend a whole year saving in order to possibly do this event once in their lifetimes, enjoy it as much as possible for as long as possible....
(Get their moneys worth)
Sure you can still do damage in a winch will but theirs a 90% chance you won't. Go sit your 4x4 in a pool of mud for 1hr and you’re almost guaranteed to be doomed. To me this doesn’t show one’s driving competence! Only how lucky you are -like tattslotto. :?

Has anyone heard any new feed back on todays stages about anyone from vic????

Very interesting coversation...
With all the talk of $$$$, what, without being too personal, would a ballpark figure be to compete in such an event.
I know how longs a piece of string, but an idea would be great.
Yes one day i too could be lucky enough to compete in such an adventure.
Also i've followed this event for years and have noticed the evolution of
the vehicels that compete,do people think that it's going to get to the point
of "cheque book racing". :?: I saw it alot when i was rallying.

So the more info we have the more we understand.

Cheers Ian.

ps, keep the cool pix coming.YES i'm jelous.

kirragc,
yes i remember the first year, i was there. Tell me how many vehicles have had to pull out of the event due to damage done on a cliff hanger type stage, maybe a couple that i can remember & i've competed in 3 OBC & officiated in 1. How many vehicles have had to pull out because of deep mud\water a HUGE difference!.

Starting figure and go from there.
Entry is around $2500. I think.
Getting there add another $2-3K-driving towing flying hiring?

If you are talking price of the cars then there would only be one truck under $50 000. If you are talking about just doing the event then $10 000 is pretty average to get there, compete and get home. Lot of coin to throw away a truck in the water. A lot of pi@##$ off competitors.

I agree sending the trucks through 6 ft of mudy water is rediculouse. Is this event not hard or expensive enough.
