Adjusting Wheel bearings on a 40 series

Hey guys,
My mechanic told me when i went for thee roadworthy that i had to adjust my wheel bearings. he said you just whip the hub off and there will be two bolts there. well i have taken off the hub so all there is is the axle sitting there and a big hexagonal bolt maybe that goes around the axle and i thik what is the bearing case. now where do i find the two bolts to adjust the bearing and do you know how much i would do it? or would i just put the tyre on and see when it is tight?

undo the outer big nut
then remove the locking washer

then tighten the inner big nut
then refit lcok nut bending tabs to lock the nut in place
fit 2nd nut
grease hub install hub

jobs done


this is front btw

Thanks pcman i just wasn't sure on which nut exactly but my brother just explained which one and you told me what to do thanks :D

and yeh it was front one

It might pay to buy the gregorys manual and find a 54mm tube socket ($30 on ebay from the4wdshop) and a torque wrench to get the torque settings correct, otherwise if you wanna do it the bushies way you can use a punch/screw driver and tighten the bearings up enough to get rid of any play up and down, side to side... Id go for the proper torque settings tho :?

Hired gregory's from the library and have one off ebay on the way :)
It has already had the screwdriver treatment so can't do much about that. maybe buy a new nut one day :roll:
prob got the 54mm socket round here somewhere.
I will torque it too!

A normal 54mm wont fit as it has to be long to fit over the stub axle, and small enough in diameter to fit inside the hub... aparently a machined down 54mm impact socket can be used.

You can buy new nuts and tabs for $12 a side off ebay from the4wdshop :)

i believe toyota is 55mm and nissan is 54mm, although those tube spanners are probably inacurate enough that a 53mm would still fit.

Did one side. know how to do it now and the other side should take me an hour max.

Depends how bad hard your cone washers are to get out, but it shouldnt take an hour, i rekon once ya know what ya doing youl do it in 20mins. (ie when ya do second side).

How are you adjusting the wheel bearings btw, just spinning the wheel and feeling when they are right? cause you cant make em to tight, and you cant have em too loose.

Toyota give torque settings which mean you dont have to approximate these things, but that would mean you need a torque wrench etc.
