95 defender

Post by rangemann »

me mates looking at a 95 defender trayback.
just a bullbar extra.
done a 150,000
turbo diesel
$12k

he hasn't driven it yet, the blokes still doing the road worthy or something.

anybody aware of any inherent problems with these vehicles? or signs that they have been thrashed a bit?

is 12k about what you'd expect for a vehicle, he said there is nothing wrong with the interior/exterior aesthetically.

i think he's getting it through a dealer.

The price sounds reasonable considering the k's on it.

A '95 should have the R380 5-speed, and by then it didn't have any problems (early ones had a problem with lubrication of the rear of the main shaft - as did all LR 5-speeds). Noticeable by a "clunk" when you go on and off the accelerator.

The 300Tdi is a good motor - check that the timing balt has been replaced (should have been at 70k and 140k) and check that the update kit has been fitted to correct a misalignment problem with the timing pulleys.

There are 2 plastic plugs in the cooling system (one on the rad - the other on the motor) - good idea to replace them with brass ones as they can split.

Can have head problems or welsh plug problems if overheated or coolant not replaced regularly - check service interval. Also check that there isn't too much oil coming out of the breather into the turbo/intercooler - take the pipes off and have a look.
