lacks power vitara

Post by 4X4 Celt »

I bought a 90 vitara swb about 2 weeks ago, done the regular things new plugs leads dizzy cap and changed oil.... new brakes. the problem is on the highway it wont do more than 90 to 100 k's.

Motor is pretty good dosen't blow smoke or burn oil plus no rattles. starts first pop dosent surge or backfire. but i'm still thinking maybe carby? any input most welcome.

1.6 litre carby... 5 speed.

It does sound most likey a carby problem. Usually the actuator vacume port for the secondary gets all carboned up and blocked. Air filter is ok??

Hello Jrzook, the air filter which i replaced wasn't bad no oil or black carbon...last person that owned it neglected everything and i'm pretty sure there is a couple of smaller air hoses off the carby and one or two been blocked off. i looked for any that maybe sucking air but found none.

think i may replace the carby or try a can of carby cleaner before forking out anymore cash.

Just to cross a couple of things of the list do a compression check and check the timing. If you're looking for a little extra go, this model also responds well to altering the cam timing.

Thanks CJ, good point guess i should have done a compression test first, next day off that's what i'll do. as for the timing i guess that will be the next venture if the compression is fine. again thanks for the help.

you could also try the hand over the carby while revving trick to suck any crap out of the jets etc
