1 A.D.D. Q and a Diff temp Q

Post by pongo »

Just wondering if the front tailshaft always spins in 2wd on a ADD equipped 4runner ?

Also My rear diff got that hot today that i couldnt hold my hand on the housing. Is this normal for a LSD on a hway ?

Basically, I had a vibration today on the way home on the hway and everything seemed fine. except the diff was very hot . When i got home and got under it properly i noticed that the cover on the front cardinal joint had shaken a bolt loose and broke free. So i was wondering if all it was a case of a rough road causing the cover to break free causing the vibration, Or im in big trouble.

My LSD was rebuilt last year and is now leaking oil out the pinion seal. there appears no movement in the pinion, but there is a fair bit of backlash. the oil also didnt smell the healthiest either.

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Cheers

bad smell to your oil could be because it got 'cooked'

As for the heat and vibration - maybe your LSD is jammed? Doesn't sound good

And I do not think tailshaft runs when in 2wd - but I have never been run over bu a SURF or 4Runner so ...

I'm pretty sure on an ADD equipped Hilux or Surf that the front tailshaft does not spin in 2wd.....the only thing spinning is both axles/CV joints, and 1 half of the diff. The other half is not spinning cause the ADD is not connecting the axle to the diff.

the front tail shaft does not spin in 2WD only the front cv.

And your diff will get hot, but not like you are saying, something aint right there unfortunetly.

Check your rear diff oil and see what colour it is,if its glittery there is a problem,There should be a little movement in the pinion when both wheels are on the ground

Yeah im gunna drop it out tommorow and have a look. There is a bit of movement about 3 mm at the flange. However it feels as though its " springloaded" as in, I turn it and feel it clunk but there it pressure there and then it returns to centre. this happens both ways.

My main concern is in 2 weeks i have to drive to wagga for the weekend and then home via canberra . So its about 1000 km of hway travel in 3 days. I really need it to be reliable as im not sitting by the side of the road with a 6mth old daughter and my wife. If it was just me going i would take the risk and bring a sleeping bag and esky.

Maybe its just upset from being across the road from the Wattagans and not beiing allowed to play.

Really appreciate the help guys
