Buying USed Pajero Qns

Post by vSAHARAx »

Hey all
My brother has decided to buy a 2nd hand pajero, so i thought i should venture over this side of the forum to ask a few Qns reguarding buying a 1997-1999 Pajero with a 2.8l Turbo Diesel.

*What do we need look out for when buying a used pajeros?
*Where there any problems body or drivetrain wise?
*Where the 2.8's a good motor, where there any common problems with this motor?
*What is the life expectency out of the 2.8?

Cheers in advance

Do it.

Mitsubishi had the Pajero well sorted out by the late '90s. IFS is only significant offroad limitation. Rear end can be made to flex pretty well, Mitsubishi make good LSDs, front locker is available, and crawler gears. 33" tyres will fit pretty easily, and Patrol rims are a good fit too.

Good strong drivetrain, I'm not aware of any particular problems with body/drivetrain. Do all the normal rust/offroad damage/unusual noises type checks you'd do for any 4by. Some people will tell you Pajeros have 5th gear problems - that was 1980s models with a different box.

The 2.8td was class leader for power when it was released in Aus, but economy was never it's strong point. All mechanical, so no option to chip it. I've heard it responds well to "tweaking" - but I don't know what can be done other than wind up the boost and the fuel. Cracked heads comes up occasionally, but it's possibly abuse related.

If he's thinking of a long-term acquisition, the current DiD engine shares the same block. ;)

Cheers,

Scott

i think he just wants a reliable car, he has a cruiser ute to play with, so the Jero will be the family car for the Mrs to drive the 3 little ones around in. all it will do is beach driving and tow the boat. I doubt he'll be allowed to play 'tweak' it until the newness wares off, or should i say til the handbrake says yes ;) ;)
