THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Hi Shane (Fish)
Congratulations to you and Adrian for doing so well, 7th a fantastic effort.
Disappointing for us not to get passed Monday, but after reading your very well written story I felt that I just completed the OBC.
The set up of KURMIT with Nissan running gear has paid off and is something I need to do with the Bushie if I decide to have another crack at it next year, anyway once again, a great effort and thanks for the story.
Laurie.

4dogs wrote:I'm sure if someone checked, they would find that the gauge being used at Broken Hill is a couple of mm under size and the Pro Comp X Terrains are a perfect fit ie:maximum allowable size.Tyres were to big and didnt fit in the guage
A bit hard to put up a protest with the above being true.
I was there, and the gauges are the same size, and the scrutineer didnt want to pass some tyres at the time of scrutineering.
The tyres that didnt fit straight up were let down in pressure, then the car was jacked up and the tyre rotated so the flat part was on the side, for the gauge to be pushed over. I witnessed this occuring on several vehicles up there.
37 x 12.5 were one, and 325/80's were another.
I believe the ccda will be investigating, because the rules of putting in a protest were changed on the friday night, once people were in camp, to prevent a protest being put in on one tyre, meaning a protest had to be in by 8pm fri, and it had to include $500 for each vehicle running the tyres, according to the organisers, though protesting the scrutineering, rather than the tyres would of cured this.
The scrutineer also wanted to re scrutineer some vehicles during the event, but was unable to do so I believe.
Just some info for you, and I have no interest in wether they fitted or not, or are ruled to be acceptable, or not, but hope it gets sorted, because technically, if you do the same thing with a 42" tyre, so it creates a flat spot when parked, then rotate it on the jack, it would fit through the gauge.

Thanks Celia, Joe and Laurie for your kind comments. Unfortunately I didn't get a score sheet when they were being handed out and Ian Lacey was "too busy" to get me one when I asked and said they would be on the OBC website, probably by this time next year
Laurie it would be good to see the Bush Rangie complete another OBC in its entirity and good luck with your future upgrades.
As for the tyre debate. The rumours that were running around before the event, during the event and after the event were incredible. In my opinion the scrutineering process is one where you are asked to show up with your vehicle in a "Ready to Race" condition. For example all recovery gear, compulsory equipment, swags, clothes and full fuel tanks. Jacking a vehicle off the ground, deflating a tyre to 10 psi and rotating it isn't a "Ready to Race" condition.
Some teams running the 37" Procomp X-Terrains probably made a guage and drove on the tyres until they were down to size. Others probably assumed they would be OK and did nothing about it.
If what was written above is true then the CCDA really needs to make a strong stance here or else it's creditability and the whole scrutineering process will always be questioned and never trusted.
The CCDA is a drivers association and not an Event Organisers association. It was formed, I believe and yes I was there at the early meetings at AMV, so those who participated in the sport could help the sport grow and head in the direction of where the competitors wanted it to head.
Now, and not for the first time either, an Event Organiser is telling the majority ie: competitors how their rules are to be obeyed and not the CCDA rules when it's a CCDA event.
I have a few other things about the event I would like to get off my chest but one thing at a time.
Don't get me wrong I had a fantastic week but certain things unfortunately take away how good a week it really was.
I look forward to some other people who were part of the OBC speaking their mind so someone might sit up and take notice of those who are supporting the event.
Cheers, Shane.

Photo's from Group A
This was our first year for the OBC, (car50)80series.
Very lucky to be mixed with a fantastic group.
We learnt heaps during the OBC.
Had winch problems and lost oil pressure on the second last day of comp.
I have pics from Group A, how do I show them on this thread?

Great report Shane, and well done to all competitors who attempted/finished the event.
I marshalled a couple of years ago, and loved it!
I was a bit tired at the end of the week, but no where near as much as what the drivers and navi's have to go through for the week after some pretty huge efforts!
Well done guys and girls!!

Great week, fantastic group of people, see you all next time.
Great week, fantastic group of people, see you all next time.
They had a really bad week which finally concluded with a broken swivel ball while doing the night motorkhna. While completing the day stages the Americans made up a sled out of logs for the front and removed the other wheel so it could be skulled dragged easier. We attempted to get it onto the bonnet to stop it digging into the sand but his didn't work. In the end we had 6 winches connected at once to slowly to steer the disco onto the tray truck.
It was a very entertaining recovery

I spoke to rog today, sounds like he had a ball. Thanks to all that posted info and pics, I especially needed to see them as i DNS'd my entry this year
One thing that needs saying (not my direct thoughts or attack on anyone) is the feeling from a few competitors is that incorrect information is best not posted at all, or have a: they may have done .... in front of it. There are some annoyed competitors coming home to rumors of problems they didn't encounter. sponsored trucks don't need false info getting out that hurts their sponsors etc, and what is especially sad is that many of the very experianced competitors and mechanics no longer view or add to Outer Limits and look down on this false info and hence the site in general. The stronger the information the better for all users of OL.
As I said above I appreciate everyone's input and am not attacking anyone form a personal viewpoint.
Cheers bru

I think I've finally worked out how to post pics from Photobucket but unfortunately I had already resized the better pics and thus they are too small. I don't have this disc at work so I've had to upload the ones I hadn't resized and such the better ones will have to wait until next week.
The pics were taken by myself when we weren't competing and by a couple of teams that elected to sit out the mud stages. Enjoy
After completion of SS4 at Poolamacca.
Laurie & Sean carrying out tyre repairs after SS4
Torn coil tower on the American Disco
Rohan Canavan mig welding the coil tower back to the chassis
Batteries set up for the mig.
A picture perfect sunrise at the Nundooka camp
Laurie and Sean winch up to the finish box of SS9 at Nundooka.
Rohan and Wayne leaving the start box of SS10 - Cliffhanger
Sunset re-fuelling at Packsaddle.
Kurmit re-fuelled and ready for transporting to Viewmont.
Rohan's GQ after sucessfully completing in night mud stage (SS11) inside the 10 min DNF time.
Mark Johnson working the winch for Greg Scanlon on the morning mud stage SS12.
Myself trying to find a hard line for Adrian to follow. We are still driving here
Still driving
Starting to loose drive now and I'm looking for the best anchor point available.
I'm back on hard ground and calling the shots on the way to the finish box
After re-rigging had to go for a swim and retrieve the dampener
Not much to go now.
Starting to get some drive again.
A very happy team after moving into 3rd place on the stage with one group to come.
Laurie & Sean, Rohan & Wayne and ourselves at the start of the 3.5 hr DNF SS13
The first of 6 billabong/mud obstacles to be encountered during the SS.
Mark Johnson checking for the best line while Greg Scanlon watches on.
Once again the good self with not much left in the wind tank due to an extremely long winch pull on the last obstacle.
Not long to go now
Packing up at the finish line. I was absolutely knackered and my skin is still dry and irritated from that Darling River mud
That's all the photos I have for now but will bring the disc into work on Monday when I will post up the better photos.
Cheers, Shane. [/img]

OBC 2006
Hi everyone. Well for a first winch challenge ever, we dove straight in.
I had an absolute ball!!! I was in Group C, and for anyone who was at the presentation would know that we all got along really well.
For me the Group made the event. Everyone had a laugh and helped with whatever/whoever needed help. I just want to say a big thanks to all in group "C". We were very unexperienced coming into the event and have learnt soooooooooooooooooooo much through our group.
So a big thanks to Henry, Kev & Manny, Darren & Huddy, Griffo, Alan & Caro, Chris & Neil (go ProComp) hehe, Simo & Tony, Brian & Keith, Redman. If I forgot anyone, i'm sorry.
Also a massive thanks to our leaders Norm & Mick Whitehead. You guy's were a barrel of laughs and thankyou for looking after us. We couldn't have asked for anyone else better.
The car came out pretty well. Only one dint in the quarter panel, and a bent side rail. The power steering packed up on the way home, but that's about all.!!
For some reason we are listed as a Toyota BJ73 but we were in a GQ Patrol.
Car Number 51. Finished the whole event to 27th place. We had never turned on a GPS before so we had to learn quickly. We didn't do too well until the last couple of Nav stages where we had finally worked it out. We found all of the points.
Once again thankyou Group C!!
