HZJ 75 series transfer case problem

Post by cruiser075 »

Has anyone had problems with there transfer case jumping out of low range? It only does it when engine braking going down very steep hills, never when driving up hills and its a horrible feeling when your crawling down a hill to have the transfer case jump into neutral

A potential easy fix is to check that the high low shift detent spring is still in good shape and hasn't lost its tension. The detent cap in on the top of the case, just aft of the high low shift lever. IIRC it takes a 17mm or 19mm spanner to remove, use a magnet to pull out the spring from the top of the transfer case and replace with a new one.

But the most likely cause is a worn out transfer output shaft where the high-low clutch rides. Its replacement is time consuming but not too tricky if you have access to a hydraulic press.

Ive seen broken engine mounts do the same thing because the motor can rotate too much and the stick hits the body and pops it out of low. Might be worth a look aswell
