Fellas, I know gas is fine and I know she's paranoid! When I said "if you ask 'why' then you can't be married", I meant that if you were married, you'd know it's pointless asking "why" because they never have a good reason other than "just because" .

Thanks for the heads-ups on the Hilux Surf .. confirms my worries. Seems these are about the only thing that comes up on carsales etc when I search for diesel auto but I'll keep looking.

Discos might be worth a look.. first thoughts are that they're a bit big or (big-looking) and they're English... the only things the poms can usually be trusted with is warm beer and mushy peas. But I suppose the TDIs are volkswagen engine anyway right?

Not so much trained as I know what the consequences are if i fail to obey But yes she sure does. "This is a family decision" blah blah blah gives me the shits. I love everything about married-with-kids life except that (and sleep deprivation).

Not necessarily the injectors pumping more fuel in (its the same), but it requires more fuel to get to the same speed, and you put your foot down a lot more when they're cold to get them going.

Eg - A 50km/h hill near me I go up in 4th at half throttle normally... When I've just started the Rocky, I am in 3rd gear flat to the floor to keep at the speed... hence i will use more fuel.

Either way, you cant kill them

Getting closer now. The missus tried to walk to playgroup today and just about killed herself and the baby so now she's 100% behind getting a second vehicle . Plus, said she's happy for me to get a manual if an auto is too hard to find in what we want... so I recon dual cab lux with canopy here we come!!

P.S. Enough gas already I'm keen on trying biodiesel anyway. I make limited quantites of biogas myself but am yet to find a way to bottle it .

nope, Land Rover through and through. Thats why a '97-'98 was suggested, just when they sorted the bugs out (after BMW ownership) they changed the engine to the TD5....

About three years ago I had to go to Sydney for two weeks and had the Defender crew cab loaded up with work gear running around the outer western suburbs and it delivered 9.5l/100km. On the open road it's worse thanks to the lack of aerodynamics, muddies, sheer bloody size and weight, etc. but most Disco drivers I know easily achieve 10l/100km or better on a trip.

i have a 3b in my bj and get about 12-13L/100k. id like to think the factory turbo (13bt) gets better enconomy than that. its got p/s and had a/c but is a manual.. so with 4cyl rego + regular servicing + price of diesel* it all adds up in the end.

That bj74 posted on overlander is mint and you wouldnt be disappointed if you spent a little more for that.. but for your budget.. id suggest the following:
rangerover v8
dual fuel but pref striaght gas
probably find a auto no probs
comfy coils, i think the bj74 has leaf susp.
not so much maintenance required
bigger than a bj74 mwb inside and out

cons are v8 rego and insurance i guess but running costs should be a crapload cheaper than diesel in the long run...

anyway. thats just my 2c.. hope its some food for thought.

*commercial biodiesel only seems to be a few cents cheaper but there is the home grown alternative..

Thanks all for the help. With that and now with the missus a bit more in check I've decided to get what I wanted all along, a diesel dual cab ute. Seeing this thread is all over the place due to my vague and changing requirements, I've started a new one now that I'm solid on what's wanted.

Why is it that Disco's get such good economy? They aren't light, or are they? What differences between a a disco and a hilux or landy make for such better consumption figures? Also, why do they sell so cheaply?

Maybe I should sell my surf and get one of these... The surf is so much prettier tho!
