Ok, I've started a new thread because my requirements have changed and narrowed a lot since I started the last one.
The subject says it all. Reliability is more important to me than off-road ability within reason.
There was a similar thread here 3 years ago. Most people said the Navara and Rodeo were best value for money, hilux the worst -- i.e. hiluxes were a good 3-5 years older with more ks for the same price. People reckoned the "unbreakable Toyota" thing was a myth (though this is news to me and I'm happy with our vienta).
So, does that still hold today for the $7-8k bracket?

You should get a top notch mid 90's hilux for that i'd say. IFS model prolly
Could get an slightly older, 'better'(offroad) solid axle for 4-5 in good nick. Go 2.8, 2.4's gutless even in 2wd hilux.
I dont think navara's or rodeo's come close to hilux in offroad. reliability i'd say about the same... with rodeo at the bottom.

he's after a daily driver/family ute/weekend bush so IFS would prolly be ok for him. But we know what happens when the bug bites
yeah, plenty of mid 90's dual cabs around in that price range.
Rodeo - 2.8 turbo deisel is probably the best bang for buck, the non turbo Hilux's not as grunty or the navara.
Dont rule out the 2.5 t/d Tritons either, they are pretty solid.

thanks for that, I didn't realise they weren't all turbodiesels in this day and age.

yeah mate for a daily driver i would pick a rodeo i myself have a 92 4x4 duel cab rodeo td that i flog back and forward to work in it uses about 9L/100km in fuel dose not use a drop of oil with 250 000km on the clock and there is heaps of room in the back seat unlike some other duel cab utes. I have had petrol one before but just did not go as good as the td that my 2 cents worth.

Thanks mate, I was thinkin the same thing, good to hear it confirmed. I reckon even if hiluxes are more reliable for a given number of k's, the lack of turbo is a turnoff. at the other then though I'd be worried about Triton given the problems people have with Magnas... hoping to find a good Rodeo but would consider a Triton (courier/bravo/navara seems to be nonexistent in this config and price).
