sd33 24v (some help needed)

Post by junior »

hello all,
I have recently purchased a mq swb diesel with 24 electrtics for $450.it has a good body but the thought of 24v electrics worries me alittle, due to the later plan for a v8 transplant.Im thinking of running the diesel for a short period of time until all the suspension and body mods are complete(unless i like it that is.....).The problem i have is purchasing a cd player, uhf, spotlights, and some other small electrics to suit the now 24v, but to re use at a later date with the 12v set up.I was told to by a 24/12 volt reduser about $120,my question is can i buy a higher amp unit to take care of all these electricals or is it a case of one for each?
I have heared that the change to 12v is rather easy, globes, dash, relays, starter, alternator, glowplugs and the sender units
i have some of these in 12v from another MQ wreck but for now the 24v may be the way to go (better start power),until i fit the v8 that is.
Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated

;)

Mine is on 24v and for the 1st 18 months I had it produced nothing but problems for me. After upgrading the alternator with an 85amp Bosch unit and replacing everything from the reg. to the battery terminals it runs without dramas. I also run two 24-12v invertors each around the 100amp mark. The first runs stereo, phone kit, both CBs and cig. lighter, while the other runs the compressor for the locker.

For some time I did use one battery for my 12v sources but always had issues with one being fully charged and the other with nothing. So inshort use invertors if possible and a cheap alternative for all of your ligts is just replacing the globes with 24v ones.

Ive got an 82' MQ SD33 on a 24 volt running system, and ive got my radios and lights and stereo/amp running off both the batteries without any inverters or dramas.
Under the steering wheel/colum in the dash there is a 12 volt source that powers all of the 12 volt in dash electrics and gauges of the car. This 12 volt source is standard on the vehicle to enable 12 volt things such as the cig lighter to work, and has its own inverter somewhere so the guages and standard 12 volt items dont flatten one battery. To find it, trace the power back from the cig lighter and tap into that, then all your electrics will draw power from both batteries with the stock setup of the patrol. All in 12 volt. Doesnt cost ya a cent.

thanx to all for your help,i was under the impression that all components were 24v.I will trace out the 12v source and take it from there.Might be easier than i thought it would be.
Do you guys like the 3.3 diesel, this is my first diesel,v8 boy mostly.
Hows the fuel economy, reliability of these mq diesels.

Thanx once again for all your help, much appreciated.

v8 in mq

Post by DR Frankenstine »

hi mate
i have had 5 different motor gearbox combinations in my mq

1# 2.8l 4spd std
2# 2.8l 4spd fuel injected/ turbo intercooled
3# 4.9l ford v8 c4 auto
4# 5.8l ford v8 c10 auto
now 5# 3.3l turbo/ intercooled nissan 4spd (to changed to 5spd soon)

go the turbo diesel plenty of power (if you trick them up) and its only tuning and exhaust. i was told that by tuning my rig the way it is and getting the power i am getting it wont last long. i have probably done 30000kays since getting the power and no probs. i would say that im getting nearly as much torque as the 302 i had in it but 3 times the fuel economy. the more i do to it the better on fuel it gets.

The SD33 is a pretty strong and grunty motor, heaps of down low power and a bit of sting to it as well compared to some of the older toyota diesels. The fuel economy is going to be excellent compared to a V8, for me its a little worse because i had a 2.2 diesel hilux not that long ago, but even so its still not that bad concidering ive got over 1 litre more engine and 2 extra cylinders.

screwy.

Yeh my bro has a mq swb with a worked 350 on gas and it drinks alot too, mind you he hasn't had it tuned properly yet.I have a liking for these with v8's though i must say.The diesel acconomy would be much better i know but not alot of power if non turbo, good enough for off road though i guess.
I think ill drive it with the diesel for a while and do all the body, suspension and interior and if im not liking the diesel i can sell it and fit the v8 in its place.
Does anyone know what a turbo set up for this would cost,id do most of the work myself if you dont need to be a rocket scientist that is hehehe.
cheers ;)

if you turbo a std 3.3 diesel it will! ( i repeat will) break the crank. buy a std turbo diesel and bolt it in. should only cost $1500 or so if you play your cards right.

Hey v8patrol, u wana sell the new glow plugs u have?
If not do you know what sort of money they are worth?
I picked my mq up on sat and it hasnt been running for almost 12 months, put 2 x batteries in her and primed her up after about 5 mins she fired, not bad for that long sitting.I think the glow plugs may be abit tired due to it not liking to start, may just need a good run and a good tune.

Ill let you know soon about the disso trip, tonka 2 will be in and some others aswell.

Do you have much parts that you want to sell or you keeping them for rainy day?

the glow plugs retail for around the $30.00 each at most auto shops, can get em for less if the shop is having a sale and have seen em advertised for as little as $16.00 each...... question of being in the right place at the right time !
Spare parts....geeesh, I own 3 MQ's ( all on the road) and and a mate owns 3 aswell (2 on the raod)so we are allways looking for MQ's we can use as wreckers.... what parts exactly are you looking for anyway??
