Steve MOST turbo suppliers will not just sell you a kit, you need to have them professionally installed. All 4WD supplies shops (ARB, Opposite Lock, TJM/Warehouse etc) have kits that they can supply and install, starting from around $2800, but you may need to add to that cost if your vehicle needs fuel injector servicing, fuel pump overhaul, big end bearings or any other engine work at the same time. If you're dead keen on do-it-yourself, put an ad in the 'wanted' section and get on the phone to wreckers and see if you can turn up a complete kit - a second hand kit should be around the $700 - $1000 price range but you get no guarantee of performance and no warranty. It is fairly simply bolt together stuff to install but tuning is a bit trickier and needs to be left to someonw who knows what they are doing.
in answer to the original question, you can use a toyota CT20 off a 1990- 2L-TII or 2L-TE (2.4 litre motors) but the turbo is small even for those motors and will deliver poor overall performace on the 2.8 - it will give great boost at low rpm and fantastic performace to about 2500rpm but then will just restrict the exhaust. It is far better to get a kit with a turbo matched to the engine size. Turbo brands available might include Schwitzer, Mitsubishi, Garrett etc but the brand doesn't really mean a lot, they are all pretty good and will give more than adequate performance. You have to add up whether it's worth spending $3k+ (or gambling $1000 and your own installation skills) against the value of the vehicle, keeping in mind that it doesn't add much, if anything, to resale value.
cheers

Hi Brian,
Good to hear from you again. I sold the old MQ (Screwys)last year and have now bought this 4 Runner. Top 4WD. Do you think an extractor and big exhaust and flow thru muffler will improve it much?
It is not to bad, But when going up a hill with the boat she is a bit slow and I am worried it will be bad for the motor.

Re: Turbo
extractors and big exaust will cost $1000 and make it noisy - if you've got $1000 to spend, blow it on a turbo. Extractors will give you 5 - 10% extra, TOPS, even a dodgy turbo setup will get you at least 30%.giffo wrote:Hi Brian,

the 2.8 will tow your boat anywhere as long as you're not in a hurry, just pick a gear that will hold revs at 3/4 throttle and don't let it lug down under 1500 - 2000 rpm.

AGAIN, I have found a turbo (not finished yet!!)
I have the chance to buy this turbo. It's off a 3T-GTE 1.8lt Toyota motor.
Would this be OK for my 2.8 (1991)????? It's a CT20 turbo

The CT20 turbo is also the one fitted to the 2LT engine. Should just be a matter of a straight bolt on. The CT20 will be your cheapest turbo option. Well known that the CT20 is a little small for the 2.8, but will give you some improvement.
Suggest you read Brians posts agin too.
