Okay, quick update...

As you can see from the photo's above - the engine is now in place, we ripped out the gear box and swapped over all the bits we needed and got that back into the car again on saturday night...

All the wiring is completed, except for the laying in of the airlocker loom and switches.

All hoses and connections are in place (except again for the air locker hoses and diff breathers).

The exhaust is all in place, you can see the tip placement (out the back between the rear most cross member and the tail gate... The final muffler was a little hotdog which is pretty cool sounding - still lets the engine run loud when it gets some throttle, but quiet at idle too.

The photos also show the mounting of the fuel tank in the floor at the back of the car - we are still get make a cover (shelf) over the top of that to try to get back some of that storage area.

And as you can see - the painting of the car has finally happened - and geez it's come up a treat i reckon... :cool:

Well, fingers crossed we will have everything done in time for this weekend - heading off to the snow with the zook club :)

Still to do:
Final construction of car body (put doors, windshield, mirrors, front clip and grill back on.
Make some shock mounts for the back of the car
Put the rear drive shaft back in with an x-fer mounted handbrake installed too.

Looks like we should make it :?

Hmm, may be interested in the seats - but it also looks like i may have finally sourced some stock vinyl seats too...

where did you find them?

Comon - what's wrong with Olive Drab - i reckon it looks awesome... actually - the paint is called "Duck Punt Paint" and came from Aussie Disposals... i think it's great... :D

A quick update on the engine performance:

0 - 100km per hour is now waaaaaaaaaay quicker than the 1.3 could handle... it holds 100 no worries at about 3500 to 4000 rpms, 5th gear at 10psi of boost.

Low speed performance when crawling is a treat - the efi keeps the little engine well fed when on angles so there is little to no need to keep the engine revving over at any particular speed.

High Speed Torque is also very good - 5th gear up hills works a treat - where i would previously have shifted down to 4th and still lost speed - the mighty 660 pulled the car along at a constant speed and was even happy to accellerate to catch up to the slowing stocky motored sierra in front of me.

As for the progress on the car as a whole project:

I think we need another muffler - it was a wee bit too loud - we spent the whole weekend with ear plugs in whenever it was reving higher than 4000rpms.

The car now sits level, but also a good 2 inches taller at the back than before - due to the removal of the hardtop body and shifting of the weight in the car. I think we will work on the springs and remove a few leaves to get it to sit lower.

Work still to be completed:
Roll Cage
Rear Shocks
A few wiring changes
Air Box for air filter.
Front and Rear tube bumpers (?)

So all up - a great new setup that i'm very happy with - still plenty to do, but it is clear that the motor has been a good choice.

Looks like quite a fun weekend with plenty of fun for everyone!

As for the paintjob... hey, it looks the part, I'm all for it :)

Hope to be seeing it at Dixon's Creek on the 30th! (hope it doesn't rain too, so I can go with my "standard" GV!). I'll try to get some video footage as well with the digital camera if you ask nicely ;)

PS - and thanks for your help too regarding the shocks... will be measuring spring extension tomorrow... as for the HQs... this may seem a silly question, but are they a brand? are they shocks for the Holden HQ? are they for Bronco HQ? ... fill me in please... actually, I'll ask on the relevant thread just in case anyone-else has the same question

Ya I heard... might go play elsewhere instead... don't know... but it's pretty dull (and very inconvenient if getting bogged) going out alone though, plus I don't know any good places yet.. .just tried Bunyip after a rainfall (AT tyres up front, 100% road tyres at the back... shocking stuff) and Angahook State park around Aireys Inlet/Anglesea... that aside, there were some nice obstacles near Karkarook Park (behind Bunnings, Moorabbin... off Warrigul Road) but now huge signs are up saying "Private Property, Horses Grazing".

Again, if people didn't go tearing up the place maybe the owners wouldn't mind it so much but there was some serious damage done do the tracks and grassland there. :(

Oh well, such is life I guess... and damn, it was "close" to home too!

Quick Update:

Cage:
I checked out the progress on the roll cage being built for the car - still in it's development stages but most of the bar work is done (currently just tacked together)... So hopefully in another couple of weeks it should be cool to go in for good.

Exhaust:
A silencer has been inserted into the tip of the exhaust and has made it far quieter to drive - previously it was very droaning at 4,000rpms.

Boost:
The duel stage boost controller is set up and working... I flicked it on to High just before hitting the freeway and the car just left the other cars for dead until i got to 100 and then i just backed off - the gear noise is still very loud in the car - getting that looked into tomorrow. :?

Gears:
We are having a bit of an issue with 1st and 2nd gears - a bit hard to get into first, and very hard to get out of 2nd... Hopefully these will bed in a bit after some use... :?

Honks from a Carful of chicks on the freeway tally now amounts to 1. That's still 1 more than the car ever got before that though... ;) I can't work out of it was the car, the noise, or just the fact that i was driving a car without a full canopy on a night that was only 2 to 6 degrees C. :)

Did they just honk at you or were they honking at all Sierra's?

As for the gears, I had that problem as well on the Terios (bad comparison I know). The reason was hitting a rock which moved the transmission's support so it tilted something like 5mm. I've since straightened it, but the thing to do was when moving to 2nd, push the gear lever down without guiding it fully... let it slide to left or right once you're pushing it already in the right gate. Just let it go where it wants to go... in my case, I had to push it down and it'd go slightly to the right... and problem solved :)

If it goes in the way it wants to, it'll be a lot easier to get it back out of gear when you want to, otherwise it feels really hard, like you're fighting it to get it out of gear...

But then again, that might not be your problem at all :)
