I just installed a new oxygen sensor and was about to take my GQ for a spin when i couldnt get it into first gear!!! I pumped the clutch but nothing!! I had a look at the slave cylinder and there were no leaks and the pushrod was in place. I then bled the system with fesh oil but still cant get it into gear!!! I turned it off put it in first and started it and it started to take off very slowly.
Do u think my clutch master cylinder has crapped itself? Any sure way to test?
Help would be much appreciated.

Hey Jimbo,
My mates GQ has trouble getting into 1st gear. I've also heard the same about others, but it wasnt clutch problems.
My GU sometimes has trouble getting 1st gear. Other people reported the same problem with their GU. If I stop at lights and leave my foot on the clutch, I have no problem. But if I leave my foot off the clutch for several seconds, I can't get it into any gear. Most of the time it works okay.
I've been told I need to change the box oil to a particular synthetic oil, but I'm still trying to find out what is the correct oil.
It may not be the same problem, but you never know.

Jimbo usually if the master or slave has shit it's self you will have full clutch but trouble getting enough slip into the clutch to change gears, your problem sounds like this scenario although the last paragraph sounds like the opposite and you have too much slip.
Sometimes strange things happen. I would hop under and remove the slave cyl and pin (keep the hyd line attached) then take note (mark?) where the clutch fork relaxes to as this will be the position that gives maximum clutch friction, then rebolt the SL and pump the clutch a couple of times, if the fork has moved away from its relaxed position without your foot on the clutch consider adjusting the pedal height and freeplay until it becomes usable.
You can also check the movement of this fork with someone on the pedal and you below to see how much movement the fork travels through.
Sometimes it can be hard to clear all of the air out of the line.

4by consider checking out Castrol syntrans/syntrax full synthetic (forget which, think it's trax). Recomendations are very often era dependent not equipment dependant.
ATM I am looking into using the one above in a GQ although it is not recommended back in 96 so still not today even if a 05 GU did run an identical gearbox and is recommended.

fnqcairns i think you are right in your first sentence. I strted it in gear today and it didnt move but i let the clutch out the slightest and it takes off. Also today i could feel the clutch pedal pulsating as i pushed it in.
Where abouts should i bu a master cylinder from? I'm in melbourne's west

Jimbo dont spend any money! based on your last reply your problem is all adjustment, get your clutch pedal height and freeplay correct first it will fix the problem. No need to rebleed either at this point although air bubbles can do this also - your choice which way you go.

Yeah adjust so it becomes useable if you can get that much - you should, at least your pulsing should disapear then get serious with the bleeding again combined with again more adjustment until it works well.

Do you have a booster?
as there is a bleeder screw over near the fuel filter,on a metal block.
Its sounds strange,As usaully things just dont stop working or change
with out an obvious cause.
Maybe???? A master cylinder is bypassing internaly????
Try clamping hose between master and slave and you should get a hard pedal. If it is, its good.If not theres your prob.
Check Slave or hose may have collapsed inside.
If not theres your prob.
I would doubt that adjusting you master's pushrod will fix it, as unlike the old days they are set and forget.

Clutch dramas!!
I pulled the cap off the master cylinder and had a look while some1 pumped the clutch. I could not see any fluid bubling back up or bypassing in anyway.
i think it may be the pressure plate due to the pulsations and there is also a slight noise as i release all pressure from the clutch.
I spoke to my dad and he thinks the same thing. I rang the guy i bought the patrol off (8 weeks ago) and he said he had put a PBR heavy duty clutch only 10,000km beofor i got it. I just hope if i replace it it lasts longer than that!!
Any ideas??? Is there an inspection plate to look in through?
If it is the clutch what should i get? Nissan quoted $550 for the kit
