hey all, just wondering what the deal is with offset rims, i have 235x75 tyres on my sierra and they rub a bit (rubbed the rear inner bit back to metal now a bit of surface rust has appeared grr)
anyway someone reconmended offset rims.. does offset rims mean wider rim width or just pushed out to the edges further?
and if it is just wider, does that mean my tyres will be slightly less tall, and wider? thats not a bad thing by the way.. will it affect the wear on my tyres?
and someone said somthing about ford f150 rims, do they have sunrasia patterns or are they just the usual dodgey looking car rims?
....... anyway to get them REAL cheap (without stealing)?

the f100 rims are sunnrasiya style, is you rs a wt or nt? if its narrow track
than the f100 rims still won't stop the rear wheels from rubbing at full articulation on the chasis well it didn't on mine i'm running 31's

Here's the sizes I could get my mate to get in the last week he worked at the tyre shop here in Brissy. Now he's not there anymore I can't help you on the price or the acquisition but any tyre shop should be able to buy the same. You can get other sizes but they're harder to get, and of course you can have custom offset made or wheels modified to any offset you like.
What you'll be looking for is -ve offset.
These are the most readily available sizes, remember there would be heaps of others but these are available from your main manufacturers (Speedy, ROH etc).
I am not sure of the actual spacing on a Sierra - but it's probably +6 or at best +0 (on a 5 1/2" wide rim). Can anyone tell him or do we need model as well.

As I've mentioned increasing your offset causes potential problems with steering lock - these can overcome depending of course on how far you go for offset. -13mm would have been better on my Vitara but the stability is markedly improved by the -25"s (as is it's COP MAGNET factor).

It's not like welding a spacer to it as that would be illegal (something about the number and places where rims can be welded, but then again I could be wrong about the legislation here in Victoria)... or is it? Is it a matter of "bending" the existing rim? Anyone know? I'm rather curious about that... Also, does anyone have an idea as to the cost of doing such a thing? (and any place around Melbourne that does that?)
I currently have a 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara (SWB... soft-top) and was looking to get a few extra cms (around 1.5cms) at each corner without getting to a point where it's illegal (yes, that's right, I've stuck to "factory-size" tyres too). Just want it for the looks and extra stability on-road and off. Always get nervous with lateral ramps!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

changing the offset on the rims normally means cutting the centre out and re-welding it in again - but closer to the inside of the rim - so that more sticks out.
there are a limited number / types of rims you will be able to do this with (i.e. you cannot do it with some rims).
Legality of this mod in vic - not sure.

I have majorly offset rims on mine and have just run foul of the rwc givers. You can only increase track width in the front by 25mm and 50mm in the rear from standard. So be careful with what you do if you are anyway concerned with a road worthy vehicle. If only for offroad use then do it as it does help performance at a small $$

Yeah, I had had a look ages ago about the legislation and had the idea that 1 inch would be ok, and that spacers were completely illegal, as was welding spacers to wheels, but this was a while back so I wasn't sure if I remembered it correctly or if "I'd dreamt it"
How did you go about acquiring your wheels? Did you buy the wheels or have yours offset? Do you know if the Grand Vitara's rims can be "cut up and offset"? Do you know anyone that does that "around here" (Melbourne)?

There is a guy in Heidelberg that does them and I can never remember the name of his company. Sorry.
I had a friend do mine. Quite easy, the hardest part is making sure they are square when re welding.

I don't "know", but suspect that you will need to by some Sunraysia type rims - they can be offset.
There are a few mobs in Melbourne that can do them for you - normally cost about 40 - 50 per rim (un-painted), so it is still much cheaper than buying wheel spacers.

Just called Ajax, they can't offset it apparently... and can't get any wheels in for the Suzuki's stud pattern... bugger
They did mention that my rims have a positive offset of 45mm, while both the Jimny's and the Sierra's have a much lower positive offset meaning I could probably get some 3cms gain on each corner... so the question remains... anyone want to sell some old Jimny/Sierra rims for a reasonable (cheapish) price?

I'm not sure what you call "cheapish", but a brand new set of sunraysia type trackII rims will only set you back 55 - 65 dollars each...
try that neway wheels that grimbo suggested - they may be able to help.
p.s. come to the zook club meeting - i'm sure there will be at least 5 people there that are trying to sell some old sierra/jimny rims.

I've been to the Suzuki Club's site "a million" times (printed out the registration form yesterday!) and have been considering popping in since I got the car a few months ago, but I live in Balaclava (near St. Kilda, Elsternwick and Elwood), and work in Moorabbin, so Glen Iris has just been out of my way so far... but I will try to make make it today so if you see an "Ugly Green" Grand Vitara soft-top with yellow tail lights and yellow fuel-tank bash plates (it's an individuality thing), that's me! I myself haven't been able to fully comprehend if I like it or if I hate it... but it's different so I'll go with that
I'll probably message you if I'm going to the meeting tonight, just need to confirm with my folks as it's a last minute thing and I don't know if anything's planned at this stage for tonight... might go with dad if he's free. How long does the meeting go for? If I'm going just for a bit of a chat and to see what the environment's like, when's the best time to go? 8 o'clock? 8:30 ok? How does it work?

get there by 8pm, meeting never starts on time - but almost... it normally runs for about 45mins to 90mins... and after that people hang around and chat until anywhere up to 11:30pm-ish.

Offsets were all listed as normal off the shelf items from a tyre place for 15" vitara rims. Later Vitaras run 16" rims so the only options are 16x8 but are still available.
(15" rims will not clear the discs so are no good to you).
Any tyre dealer should be able to order sunraysias in 16x8 with a couple of different offsets - some will have greater offset than your existing. you may fin something -25mm for the two which should stay nice and legal without engineer's approval.
Remember other things like F100's use same stud pattern - if you sk for rims off one of them you should get more luck.

I just got 5 sunrasia type wheels for the Grand Vitara, but now I have an issue with them... they don't clear the brake caliper.
Offsetting them wouldn't help I think, as the spokes themselves are touching the caliper because between the centre of the rim and the outer section of the spokes, there is only a very small angle, whereas the original rims come out in an extremely arched fashion.
So, to my question now... does anyone have any form of getting around this? The only thing I can think of is wheel-spacers (1cm should do I think... but if they're 1cm I'd probably need to get new studs/screws wouldn't I?)

you could run 10mm wheel spacers without new wheel bolts but they are dodgy. you can get them from ricer performance shops but they are multifit (designed for all different patterns). they have heaps of slop and don't align well at all.
proper wheel spacers are available from snakeracing.com.au, bigballsoffroad.com, chaos4x4.com.au...
