Busted a Hole
Hi Guys,
Have been out today and glasshouse and despite all the thunderstorms and hail have managed to stake a tyre. Just wondering can side walls be repaired or is the tyre stuffed. Also your thoughts on running different size tyres as my spair is only 31" and others 33". I can't get hold of a 33" so unfortunetely have to run on the 31" until i sort something out. i have placed it on the front right and have disengened the hubs.
Havin trouble posting up pics of the tyre but the slice is about 100mm overall in an L shape and about 20mm down from the tread lugs
Cheers

It's actually illegal to run different sized tyres across either axle, but you can run different tyres front to rear. This has been a grey area with the road authorities when it comes to the "space saver" spares too.
George Carlin, an American Comedian said; "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that".
speak with a couple of tyre places, they know its illegal to repair sidewalls but the one i went to in melb, checked it out and fixed it, but said that they would not repair sidewalls unless they were happy to let it leave there shop. as it can be dangerous. the hole in mine was from some person putting a spike in it so it was very small. Its worth taking it to a few local shops(smaller dealers) to get checked out if your happy to drive on it. Only cost me $13 bucks to get mine done aswell

repairing sidewall damage is no worries they can valcanize the torn area good as new .
had about 4 done in the last 18 months usually charge bout $40/50.
seem safe had them on back of GQ ute carrying heavy loads alot. actually run one tire to near bald & had side repaired from near new.
Cheers Andrew

if the slice isn't deep dont worry, ive got a 5 to 6 mm deep, 55mm lon g cut in my sidewall first day i took my silverstones out, only opens up when pressure is low, say 16psi, i just try and avoid that section of tire when rubbing past rocks, never had any trouble, i might tube it and use it as a spare, but since the slice hasn't grown, no drama. post a pic of your slice
sidewall damage can be repairable, as long as the cut/gash isn't too big and is vertical, not horizontal
A lot of tyre shops send them off for a 'major repair'.. as what 360 scout said, as long as the area is vulcanised it's no dramas to drive on again. (or you can chuck it up as your spare if you're concerned)

Gonna wack a newy on anyways just hopin they are in stock, Also will try to get the other repair for a spare.
What pressure do you recomend for offroad (soft, rocky, dusty, snady, shit) i never drop mine always just run standard 34psi, mostly cause i'm too lazy to pump up again. Would this have any affect on the tyre strengh.

Bias ply tyres are more repairable if you have a tear in the side wall, I wouldnt be doing a radial, maybe to only you home

bigqqqie,
if you are going to get the tire vulcanized & use it as a spare just be aware to inspect the repair once in a while, in my experiance the repair will start to perish after about 12/18 months so if you haven't worn the tire out buy then i'd get rid of it. just my observations, cheers
