4.2 turbo diesel
These engines are just about bulletproof.
if you look after them (oil/fuel filter changes at regular intervals as well as oil changes) you can expect nearly 1Million K's out of them
the major probs that go wrong are the Diesel pumps need maintenance possibly between 300 and 500 thoushand K's, the Injectors need servicing (not sure on the length of time they last) but these are normal diesel things
I have a 4.2 Petrol and i must admit i would rather the Diesel 4.2

Re: engine
What they said - Bulletproof.
Just on the oil changes, theres an interesting thread on EOz about AMSOIL lasting 30,000klms using bypass filters. This oil was tested regularly and roachies GU weighs in at ~4 ton + Trailer!

I've just changed my 12 month old Amsoil 15W40 for a load of 5W30. The oil was put-in in May last year. I have changed the filters (normal and the big mutha BY-PASS) once during that time. I was getting regular oil analysis done by Castrol Laboratory in Sydeney ("and the winner is........Sydeney"....hahahaha) and right up to the last one I had done @ 30,000klm a couple of months ago, the oil was still in "perfect" condition. I probably could have gone another 12 months, but I erred on the side of caution and changed it anyway.
..
Virtually Indesctuctible...my 88 TD42 was recently turboed at just under 300k and doesn't look like stopping any time soon..
HOWEVER...
I can give you the number of a bloke from my old club who whacked a denco turbo on DX TD42 GU. Perfectly Tuned (egt's within safe range) running around 14psi, 3" zaust.. Fairly standard setup...<-- so he says may have been lying..
He left it running one day after a big drive around tamworth area and the thing just threw a rod, leaving a fairly meaty hole...
One bad story I have heard...
